“drain the swamp”, implying that when he took office he was going to take out all the members of big banks and corrupt politicians from the government. Instead of doing what he promised, Trump has picked cabinet members who have little to no experience in their department and are as corrupt as the swamp Trump wanted to drain. For example, Trump picked Betsy DeVos for his education secretary. Many people dislike DeVos because she “has no relevant credentials or experience for a job setting standards and guiding dollars for the nations public schools” (BBC). Many people that the only reason she was picked as the nominee was because of the donation she gave to Trump during his campaign. When she was being questioned by Bernie Sanders at the Senate Committee, he told DeVos that he had heard he family donated around $200 million over the past couple of years and DeVos told Sanders “That’s possible” (La Times). One of Trump’s other controversial nominees was Jeff Sessions for attorney general. Before Trump nominated him, he served as attorney general for Alabama. During his career, there have been numerous moments that have showed that he is racist. In 1986, Sessions was on his way to becoming a federal judge. During his senate committee on the promotion, “his former colleagues testified that Sessions used the n-word and joked about the Ku Klux Klan, saying he thought they were okay” (Washington Post). After the hearing, Sessions was deemed to racist to become a federal judge. The man who was too racist to be a Federal judge was confirmed as America’s new attorney general. Trump’s nominees are not the only issues with his Presidency so far.
On January 7, 2017, Trump signed an executive order banning immigrants from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen, all majority-Muslim countries. Not only did the order ban immigrants from those countries, it also worked against people who had green cards and were overseas visiting in those countries. Many were stuck at airports after the order was signed, unable to get back to the country where the families, jobs, and schools were located because of a misguided view of their religion and stereotypes that follow Islam. Trump claimed that the law was not about banning Muslims and was about keeping America safe, even though he called for a Muslim ban throughout his entire campaign. If that were true than the law would have survived in court, but it was struck down in multiple federal courts and deemed unconstitutional due to its discrimination of …show more content…
Muslims.
Unfortunately, the battle did not end there.
Just recently, Trump signed a new executive order banning immigrants from six Muslim majority countries. In the new order, Iraq is not included because they agreed to share more information with the United States. In the new order, there is explicit language that allows green card holders re-entry into the United States. The new order does not indefinitely ban Syrian refugees “and called for prioritizing the admission of refugees who are religion minorities in their home countries” (CNN), prioritizing Christian over Muslim refugees. In an attempt to gain support for the new travel ban, it states that the FBI has reported “that approximately 300 … refugees are currently the subjects of counter-terrorism investigations” (CNN). The order lasts for 90 days, starting March 16. As of now, multiple states have joined together to challenge the order in court and one judge has already struck the ban down regarding a Syrian family trying to find refuge in Wisconsin. The order has not yet taken effect but already seems to be on a path towards
failure.
