She immediately replied, “Through empathy.” She explained that group therapy is first and foremost a spiritual and intuitive experience for all involved. A facilitator is responsible TO the group, not FOR the group. It boils down to treating clients the way she wants to be treated. Bad choices should, of course, be pointed out. However, if a client consciously chooses to make bad choices the counselor should still demonstrate support, acceptance, and love. During a counseling session, a counselor must listen to the client, listen and watch their body language when talking about different topics, and most important they have the make sure that the client is comfortable with all the information and techniques that will be used during the sessions and consent. In Chapter 9, Hawkins and Clinton states that not only should a counselor pay close attention to actions and reactions from their client but they should match the plans set out for their client with their actions. Another concept that is important is noticing when a client is resistant to change. Per Hawkins and Clinton (2005), a client can be resistant to change because they are not receiving the outcomes they want in a time frame they think they should. Simply addressing the issue of social location changed the dynamics of my therapy sessions with Brittany. She seemed to be more open and receptive to our sessions. I would first focus on the groups dynamic and observe how these ladies could provide mutual aid without forcing or placing their beliefs and experiences onto each other. For example, a young woman by the name of Cathy expressed in group about her conflicting emotions towards changing her life around. I’ve observed each group member demonstrate the characteristics of Yalom’s therapeutic factors to further enhance the development of the therapeutic factors that were used in this session. For example, Yalom’s therapeutic factors influence the process of change and recovery among therapy clients. In my opinion co founder Minna Shapiro, ACSW at first did a great job initiating questions that geared towards inquiring about the well being of the clients’ lifestyle. However, towards the end of the film, Cathy expressed how indecisive she have been in making a decision to either leave a stay with her abuser. At this point in the film I admired everyone's willingness to assist Cathy in making a healthy decision for her child and herself. I don’t agree on how the facilitators allow the group member to ambush her with their own personal feelings and opinions. After taking a test to determine my style of leadership, the test stated I was a democratic leader. Democratic leaders focus on involving all members of the group, they also encourage and motivate group members to solve problems. A democratic style involves informing and agreeing upon a common objective and individual roles in completing the task. I am partially this style, I believe that a task should be delegated to group members, rather than being left to a popular vote by the group. By allowing the leader of the group to delegate tasks, a task can be assigned to a person who is skilled in that area. After the completion of Seven Habits Profile I reflected on the profile and my potential leadership practices. Some of the categories that I scored outstanding in did not surprise me as some mirror my values and what is important to me. Category 3 discusses being proactive and choosing to live believing that one is primarily in control of their own life.
