This course met the DNP Essential II: Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Improvement and Systems Thinking. In this course, the following were discussed: principles of business, finance, economics, and health policy to develop and implement effective plans for practice-level and/or system-wide practice initiatives that will improve the quality of care delivery, develop and/or monitor budgets for practice initiatives, analyze the cost-effectiveness of practice initiatives accounting for risk and improvement of health care outcomes, demonstrate sensitivity to diverse organizational cultures and populations, including patients and providers and develop and/or evaluate effective strategies for managing the ethical dilemmas inherent…
Health care is a stage that requires multiple leadership styles to be successful. There is a distinct difference between managing employees and leading employees. A successful leader needs to have a solid understanding and ability to merge the two traits together. A group of employees that are lead during their work time instead of micromanaged will have a stronger sense of loyalty and determination to produce quality work.…
The health care manager takes on many roles and responsibilities including organization, planning, and controlling resources (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, &Kramer, 2007). Leading and influencing others is also very important as a role of a health care manager (Lombardi, Schermerhorn, &Kramer, 2007). Managers are expected to demonstrate competency, confidence, and an ability to lead employees in the proper conduct of their daily activities. An effective leadership entails establishment and maintenance of a cordial yet professional atmosphere in which everybody understands their responsibilities and their roles in the broader…
When Mr. Weed was asked whether he considered leaders within his organization as stewards of care, he responded that leaders are influencing others by training and educating them to deliver the best health care possible. He gave the example of the recent changes in CRNA’s being required to recertify periodically throughout their career and increasing the degree field from a master’s degree to a doctorate degree. In this example, stewardship involved continuous competency management of education to provide quality care (personal communication, Eric Weed, December 8, 2013).…
With aggressive legislation from our nursing leaders, respect, reimbursements, and the right to well deserved leadership has come forth. Although for many of us nurses it may seem as though many of these breakthroughs have spontaneously emerged, yet with a little respect to our roots we need to realize this emergence has been transforming nursing society since the 1800’s. The recent chaos and disorganization in health care has rendered an opportunity for nurses to take what is theirs, and that is leadership in healthcare. Preventative care has always been a forte of nursing and now it’s a realization that it is the best approach to health care today, and that is why we are the…
According to Johnson (2008), there are five leadership models for leading change - Laissez-Faire, Autocratic, Participative, Transactional and Transformational. No single model is correct, however the participative or democratic model would be most effective in the public health sector. Leadership means being inspirational to others, by motivating them to obtain their true potential…
“Although a majority of the healthcare workforce – 74% - is female, women continue to be significantly underrepresented in the top management of healthcare organizations.”…
The enactment of ACA has posed new stresses on the healthcare infrastructure— one that has already had workforce shortages for years and ill-prepared to effectively meet the high influx of patients to provide quality care. The shift in demographics and an increase of new patients receiving coverage, requires the healthcare industry have a different kind of leadership model. Workforce shortages force healthcare leaders to invent methods to efficiently use limited personnel to meet drastically increased demands. It requires less reliance on those with only medical backgrounds, and require more from those from the business world— a profound shift in management and leadership styles and techniques. Healthcare leaders are forced to deal with issues…
As a “Rookie” in my learning of the health care field, it is somewhat difficult for me to grasp why some leaders do not believe that communication is the first step to develop organizational change techniques throughout the their health care facility. I understand that most health care leaders want to go straight to implementing the organizational changes, without discussing the cause and effects that could occur. However, health care leaders need to learn how to communicate effectively to health care staffers of how the health care changes can be beneficial and/or costly for all within the health care facility. Second, Scheeres (n.d.) acknowledges Bridges highlights that leaders, “…Must provide a clear picture of what the future looks like” (p. 24). Considerably, optimism of what might the future might bring is certainly important for health care leaders and staffers to communicate how certain organizational changes can address challenges that their health care facility is…
We would like to thank the Health Foundation leadership development consultants who gave a great…
This is why physician leadership is so crucial, and going forward will determine whether our health care system achieves its potential. Physicians will resist changes imposed by health plan executives and hospital administrators, and nearly all pay-for-performance incentives fail to achieve their desired results. Physicians will change their practices, and implement improvements to benefit patients, but only when the efforts are led by colleagues they know, respect and trust.…
After taking a test to determine my style of leadership, the test stated I was a democratic leader. Democratic leaders focus on involving all members of the group, they also encourage and motivate group members to solve problems. A democratic style involves informing and agreeing upon a common objective and individual roles in completing the task. I am partially this style, I believe that a task should be delegated to group members, rather than being left to a popular vote by the group. By allowing the leader of the group to delegate tasks, a task can be assigned to a person who is skilled in that area. If this skilled individual is also a leader this time should be taken to mentor others in performing the task. I also believe…
Even though there are may be many long term strategies that can help assure our healthcare success as a nation, in my opinion, the leadership strategy is most useful and essential. Healthcare field confront many difficulties and challenges in reform period, leader are the essential part to make sure the success. The leader, is not means a role, but means a process that various department must cooperate to work together to overcome the difficulties and solve the complex…
Leadership has an essential role in the public health practice since it is required to address these issues nationally and globally. It’s important to enhance the capacity of leading by creating transformational impacts on the health care. In addition, the contribution necessary to present initiatives and projects needs to be developed when people start stepping up in the community. To step up, there must be creativity in action to put the vision into reality and having the ability to work with others. While promoting change, the goals of each community will be reached and it will also make health leaders realize their leadership potential and how they can keep solving these health challenges. Also, it is significant to identify the ability…
