Drive Tractor

For most people, getting woke up at 2:30 a.m., learning to drive tractor at the age of nine, or getting to watch a baby calf take its first breath are unusual experiences. However, these things are normal and even become a way of life when you live on a beef cattle farm. Plans get cancelled, church clothes get dirty, and becoming best friends with a cow sums up the life on a farm. When people say “start them young,” they are usually referencing to sports or school, but for farming lifestyles this means learning the basics of farming at a young age. For me, this started during hay season when I was just nine years old. Hay season is during the summer months when the crop is ready for harvest. For my family, my dad will look ahead at the weather and find the perfect week that it will be dry and windy to cut the hay. He puts aside all other work, and the hay gets first priority. The cutting of the hay comes first, which is then followed by raking. This is where I first learned to drive not only a tractor, but a tractor with a rake behind it, which flips two rows of hay into one. My dad was busy cutting other fields, and needed someone to drive the tractor. He figured I was the perfect one for this job. He taught me the basics of driving and how to control
Working hard is one of the most valuable lessons that I have learned. Being able to work hard is something I learned at a young age and will be able to use for the rest of my life. Whatever the farm task may be, doing it half-heartedly will never cut it. When working with others too, I have learned to think of them before myself. Their safety is more important than the chore being done. Along with looking out for others, I have learned to use my time wisely. I never know when the farm will throw a surprise at me, so I get my other work done as soon as I
