How much you trust an autonomous car
But real moral dilemma is accidents are happening right now
For last 130 year, people are working on least reliable part of a car, the driver, made the car stronger, added seat belts, added air begs, and made the car smarter to the bug, the driver.
An autonomous car takes inputs from laser sensors, radar, ultrasonic, cameras, and GPS. Car captures the 360-degree image and millions of data points every second. GPS alone is not quite reliable enough. Image recognition programs help the car to read signs, traffic lights and other elements in the driving environment.
Driverless car needs to be adaptive, what happens if its raining or snow, and someone darts in front of the car. …show more content…
Driverless car technology promises to eliminate 90% of those accidents by eliminating the main source of accidents, human error.
Imagine yourself in a driverless car, sitting back and watching a video. All of a sudden car experience a mechanical failure and unable to stop. If the car continues it will crash into people crossing the road or car may swerve and hit a wall to save pedestrians. This scenario is inspired by trolley problem.
Car calculates some values like the probability of hitting people if the car swerves one direction versus another direction. It's going to be a more complex calculation and require ethics.
How do we think about those ethics and how we decide. Maybe we should run a survey to find out what society wants because ultimately regulations and the law are a reflection of societal values and this is what we
