Duke TIP Field Studies Program
I am extremely interested in the Duke TIP Field Studies programs. The truth is I feel I haven't been taking advantage of the opportunities given to me, ones that will surely help develop my sense of self and pave a road to my future career. The reason for this past lackadaisical attitude towards contemplating my future is that I never had a positive idea of what I wanted to do; I neither had the motivation nor the guideline from a mentor. Neither of my parents went to college, so they told me to become, as trite as it is, "a lawyer or doctor." They did not encourage me to explore my strengths or interests and lacked the experience to provide me any structure when it came to career orientation. Therefore, growing up, when asked what I wanted …show more content…
I am currently taking AP Statistics and plan to take AP Calculus AB and BC my senior year. Because I am consistently strong in math - for example, as demonstrated by my PSAT's - I believe the Duke TIP Advanced Mathematics program will allow me to reinforce whether I want to major in something math-related/-based by exposing me to critical math as used in the real-world. Likewise, I want to determine whether I want to study psychology, which has always been a subject that I found fascinating but wasn't sure how to determine whether I excelled in it; I did make an A in my summer dual credit Introduction to Psychology course, though. Therefore, because I believe what's first priority is exploring one's strength, and then one's interest, the Clinical Psychology program would be my second choice. Nevertheless, I would greatly appreciate and love to have the opportunity to participate in either of the programs. I would benefit and learn greatly about my true strengths/interests from this experience, and I also particularly look forward to meeting and learning from peers who have similar

When I first applied to colleges, I applied under the notion that I was going to become a police officer. I was going to get my Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, take the police exam, and become a detective. Over time, however, I was able to take a variety of courses that would change my life forever. One of the classes that I particularly enjoyed was Child and Elder Abuse. Having worked with children in high school, volunteering at my school and church, as well as having a case worker instructor, my interest in youth care skyrocketed. In the class, I learned about the warning signs of abuse, how to write 51A’s and the step by step process of investigating complaints. From then on, my interests began to shift.…

My parents wanted me to go to Young Harris where there is nothing to do, like Pickens, to assure I wouldn’t get into any trouble. I didn't want that for myself, I knew I wanted a semi-city environment to help transition into a more busy area such as Atlanta, where I plan to move post graduation. After long nights of arguing about my future, my parents finally gave in and let me enroll at KSU. After enrolling at KSU I declared my major as Biology. As far as long term goals go I aspire to be a dermatopathologist and plan to later enroll into medical school. I was offered to chance to join a learning community so I took advantage of the opportunity as the email I received portrayed it to be a very beneficial experience. But at the same time I am a “first generation” student and I have absolutely no idea what i'm doing or if joining the community was ,or is, a great decision. I’m not exactly sure what I'm supposed to gain but I'm hoping for more individualized learning and the opportunity to be comfortable enough to ask for help in my classes.…

I want to retrieve preparation as a school counselor because it would be a very rewarding career. High school was a critical time in my life because there were many teachers, coaches, and counselors that invested in my development and shaped who I am today. One of the first assignments that I completed asked my what career I was interested in and to research some colleges that I wanted to go to. For my career I chose OB/GYN or a pediatric physical therapist. As I moved on in the course and research more deeply into both careers I decided that I wanted to be more of a pediatric physical therapist that an OB/GYN. After asking what I was interested in my lesson began to ask what colleges would I like to attend and then I was asked to research the colleges that I chose. While I was researching I realized how much work that was needed to get into some colleges, how…

I became a counselor in training for one summer and I found out what I wanted, not to be a counselor. I was perfect for the job, went to camp consecutively each summer, was energetic, was a great team player, worked well with children. But I felt I was needed somewhere else. Last summer I was offered a short term job, sorting files onto a computer. I was very professional, well organized, attentive to detail, but when I had completed my assignment I was done working there. I know now I do not want to work in an office. With each job or adventure I become more certain with my abilities and aware of what I want to do. UWRF was my first college acceptance letter I had received in December and since then that is the university I see myself accomplishing the most in. Someone once told me to choose a major based on my avocations and accomplishments. I have taken diverse, challenging classes through high school, that is my reasoning for going in as undecided. When I come to UWRF this fall, I will be a sheet of paper, with writing on the back that sticks out to the blank side. The written side are decisions that brought me here, and the blank side is for the memories that will be created at…

Academically, the school system has always provided me the tools so that I could learn, but outside the traditional high school classroom, there is a myriad of opportunities where knowledge can be obtained. The summer before my senior year in high school the opportunity to take classes at the University of Louisville was bequeathed upon me. My parents guided me into possibly taking core content material classes, for example, math or science. However, there was a wide range of classes in which I could partake in, but the ones which caught my attention were in the Sociology department. Although my parents were not thrilled with my decision of taking leisurely courses which were possibly not going to count towards my future major in college, I felt it was the intelligent decision.…

I found dreams I never knew I would want to accomplish so desperately, which is another reason I started taking college classes my senior year through a running start program. I have found myself valuing all of my work and dedication much more, because being independent has definitely been a beautiful episode that forced me to be an adult. I see myself going to a four-year school and find a job where i can operate with kids and people facing struggles. I love sociology and have always thought of myself working to help others. I have started a new passion towards history and society change over time which has made me strongly perplexed about a career choice. Due to my indecisiveness, I continue to take as many classes as I can, to clarify my decisions, and hope to find a perfect career for…

My career path that I stuck with through my ending of high school, conflicted on my values as a person because I am the type that likes to deal with the elderly care and help them the best way I can knowing that they don’t have the independence as much anymore. For me what interest me the most about the professional to have that mindset to be grateful for what I have in my life and focusing on how society works as a whole. I viewed social work to be a very open minded profession. Throughout my last year of high school I was reconsidering my career of social work because I was nervous to attended college. I wanted to wait out a year before going to college because I didn't know what it was going to be like, but I had to do what was best for me and go straight from high school to college so it wouldn’t be hard for me when i get into my young adulthood. Being surrounded in a positive environment allowed me to want to continue this career choose. Also, I was guided by my family to do the right thing because growing up seeing how hard it was for my mother I wanted her to see that I was going for a career that I would stick to. Even though I am in the program now in college it is not what I expected but the fact that I got the chance it is a real eye opener to have the experience to continue on in the…

When I transferred to Queens College in Fall 2015, I was a dual major in elementary education and psychology. It was at Queens College that I realized I had a strong interest in the psychology field and learning about disorders and various treatments available. I took an intro to clinical psychology course in the Fall 2016 semester, and I enjoyed having practice exercises, helping and treating a "client". I am currently taking Psychological Disorders of Childhood, and am learning about various assessments and treatments targeted for children. My education courses were also beneficial because I got to volunteer in the classroom and I got to see the issues students were really facing. It was a great precursor of what is to come in the counseling…

Starting at eight years old, I always envisioned attending college and obtaining a degree that would allow me to accomplish what I want in life. Over time, I have faced many obstacles such as dyslexia, emotional trauma, and family challenges. All through these challenges, I never let anything deter me from my course of attending college. Despite being able to overcome obstacles, I have come to realize there are things in life that I have little to no control over. Now that I have had time to experience the joys, hard work, and endless opportunities that come with being a college student, I have come too far to let anything stop me from finishing this chapter of my life. In combination with my scholarships and work-study, as a college student with little money I rely partly on my parents to finance my education. Although my parents will continue to do all they can to help finance my education, their income stability is not guaranteed, my family…
