1. There are five main competencies needed for the staffing of the Dutch Corps Commando Troops. The competencies, as mentioned in the article given, include (1) physical abilities, (2) war-fighting skills (such as skills in explosive ordnance disposal, close quarters battle, aerial infiltration, and survival, evasion, resistance and escape), (3) mental ability (cognitive capacity, for example), (4) personality traits or characteristics (such as decisiveness, emotional stability, confidence and extraversion), and last but not least, (5) integrity or trustworthiness.
In order to join the Dutch corps commando troops it is required to have a special skill set. By using different selection methods we can assess the different competencies. From a broad list, we would use CV, self-assessment, physical ability test, references, medical test, criminal records, personality inventories, mental ability test, structured interview and assessment center with work sample.
In order to assess the candidates’ physical abilities one would need to make use of a selection method such as the physical abilities test, which with physical challenges would sufficiently display which of the candidates are in league with the requirements of the Dutch Corps Commando Troops, and which of them are not. The physical ability test will determine whether the candidate will manage tough physical tasks such as strength, resistance and coordination, which are considered as “elementary skills” for any candidate/member. In addition to this, a medical test will eliminate people who have an illness or other issues that could be an obstacle in order to perform the highly demanding tasks.
