ED 553 CAPSTONE PROJECT: REQUIREMENTS
1. Create and administer a curriculum probe in an academic area. Administration and observation needs to occur over a minimum of 5 instructional settings or sessions.
Curriculum Probe: Reading comprehension: The student will be given 3 separate reading passages from a 5th grade reading level text. The number of words read correctly from the 5th grade reading passages in a one minute time period will be recorded. The student does not need any materials other than the passages themselves. The examiner will have a copy of the passage and will follow along marking words read correctly in one minute.
Procedure: The probe is administered by the examiner in the student’s home, in a quite and comfortable place so the student can concentrate on the activity. The student will then proceed to read the first of three separate passages. The examiner will record the correct amount of words read from each passage, all passages given exactly one minute each to record correct responses. The median score from each set will then be recorded. Examiner will say to the student: “I want to find out how many words you can read in one minute. When I say “GO,” begin reading here (point to the first word of the passage) and continue until I say “STOP.” If you come to a word you do not know, just skip it and go to the next one. Read as many words as you can. Ready? Go.” After 60 seconds, say “STOP.”
Scoring: Count the number of words read correct per minute on each passage. Choose median score from each set. Continue giving probes on easier or harder passages until the median scores for at least 2 sets are instructional and the one above them is frustrational.
Student and background information
The person that I did my curriculum probe with was a twelve year old boy named “Brain” (not his real name) who is classified as having a learning disability.
