There were a few months the company I work for was requiring the employees to work seven days a week with an extra four hours overtime on weekdays. During this time, absenteeism was on the rise. Everyone was so exhausted. There is a policy at work that allows an employee to be out self sick for up to three days for one attendance point, and no proof of the sickness was required. We had so many people taking three sick days just to have days off it was alarming. This policy has been in place for a very long time, and has not been overly used in that way until then. The company, although not intentionally, was affecting the resilience many people. Employees did not have the time to do those activities that allowed them to maintain their

    The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was eight long years in the making. After many bitter debates between the Republicans and Democrats, Congress passed the Act on February 4, 1993. President Clinton signed the measure into law the following day. The Act became effective on August 5, 1993. The Act required employers with fifty or more employees within a seventy-five mile radius to offer eligible employees up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave during a twelve month period for a variety of medical reasons. Some of the general medical reasons are, for the birth or adoption, to care for a seriously ill parent, spouse or child or to undergo medical treatment for their own illness. The Act spelled out provisions on employer coverage; employee eligibility for the law's benefits; entitlement to leave, maintenance of health benefits during leave, and job restoration after leave; notice and certification of the need for FMLA leave; and protection for employees who request or take FMLA leave. (1) The law also requires employers to keep certain records. It was estimated that the Act would affect five percent of America's employers and forty percent of all employees. Often, as the pressure to show impressive profits in each financial quarter increases, it is the workforce who are put under undue stress. Ranging from unreasonably high productivity standards, to sub-standard and hazardous work environments, workers face several potential risks to their mental and physical health. The paradox lies in the fact that an unhealthy and burnt-out workforce is less productive than that which is relaxed and contented. But despite this, work-related stress continues to be a nagging problem facing business leaders and workers alike.     Our goal for absenteeism was to decrease it from 498 to 120 by quarter 8 by maintaining high morale and offering health benefits to keep employees healthy. We also planned to keep our accident rate low in order to reduce absenteeism. We decided to focus the fringe benefits we offered on health benefits. We thought this strategy would work because we felt that absenteeism was caused by three factors: employee sick days (health), employee injury claims (accident rate), and willingness to come into work (morale). Although we did indeed maintain high employee morale, we could have offered more generous health benefits and safety and accident prevention training. Instead, we offered an additional vacation/personal/sick day to employees in quarter 1 which may have led to increased absenteeism. After quarter 8 our absenteeism was 283 days, the worst in the industry by a great deal. Our accident rate was also the worst, reinforcing our theory that the accident rate is tied to absenteeism. We had offered health insurance with lower deductibles, dental care and legal services, and term life insurance and eye care. We think that if we had offered a more generous health insurance plan along with a prescription drug plan, as well as invested more money into safety and accident prevention training, absenteeism would have been much lower.…

    Imagine a company where employees hate the moment when they wake up because they know that they’re going to have to go to work. Once at work, these employees, who even consider maximizing their sick leave just to have an excuse not to be there, are all day with disgruntled customers complaining about the lousy service, the late planes and lost baggage. When the saving grace of break time finally arrives, these employees rush out and exert the utmost effort to pretend not to be associated in any way with the company to avoid helping other employees and more so to avoid the irate and angry customers. To top of the employees’ miseries, sometimes, they don’t even get paid. Imagine working in an environment like the one described, without even being compensated properly, and even sometimes not being compensated at all. This is what is was like to be working for Continental Airlines in the year 1994. It’s unfortunate that the above description couldn’t be rightly called an exaggeration of how awful Continental’s situation was at that time because it actually accurately depicts it.
