Edgar Allan Poe completely transformed not only poetry, but also the way people look at life and death. Poe did a unique, morbid twist in his poetry that no other poet had done before. It is not hard to see the connection between the nightmare of Poe 's life and his work. His fictional work resembles the dreams of a troubled individual who keeps coming back, night after night, to the same pattern of dream. At times he traces out the pattern lightly, at other times in a "thoughtful" mood, but often the tone is terror. He finds himself descending, into a cellar, a wine vault, or a whirlpool, always falling. The women he meets either change form into someone else or are whisked away completely. And at last he drops off, into a pit or a river or a walled-up tomb. I loved Poe’s poetry, especially with knowing his background. His poems are extremely unnerving and wicked, yet meaningful and intriguing. In “A Tell Tale Heart” Poe describes stalking a man with a cataract eye for a week, then killing him because the man’s eye bothers him to insanity. That could also translate into Poe’s decrepitating life, from when his wife died, to him not being able to hold a job. I also am enamored by how Poe talks about death in such a beautiful, mysterious way. In “The Masque of the Red Death” Poe talks about a plague and a king throwing a party to distract him, and his people from the fog of death forming around them. When a strange party-goer ominously parades through the party to eventually kill the king; revealing that it was not a person, but the plague itself. The way Poe transfixed the image of the plague towards a person, and the characteristics, was beyond impressive. Overall, Edgar Allan Poe has captivated the brains and hearts of many readers adoring his works. Poe has reconstructed the poetry world, as well as everyday thoughts and feelings towards death and pain and loneliness. I believe Edgar Allan Poe teaches us
