were then crusades? They were a series of Holy Wars launched by the Christian states of Europe against the Muslims. A great military expedition in which was undertaken by the Christian nations of Europe for the purpose of rescuing the holy places of Palestine from the hands of the Muslims. However, things began to get complicated. At first, their objective of the crusades was at first to release the Holy Land, in particular Jerusalem, from the Turks. Later in time, it went as far as seizing Spain from the Moors, the Slavs and Pagans from Eastern Europe, and the islands of the Mediterranean. But regardless, it was a war they fought in, where they believed it was in God’s favor to fight, causing a mass slaughter for both Muslims and Christian knights, even the Jews had suffered as well.
During the Middle Ages, there were also many people that are well known as well. On such man of that category would be named Thomas a Becket, also known as Saint Thomas of Canterbury or Thomas of London. He was the archbishop of Canterbury from the year 1162, all the way up to his murder in the year 1170. However, what makes him so recognizable would be that he was at a constant engagement with King Henry II of England. They would constantly fight over the rights and privileges of the Church. In the end, he was assassinated by the followers of the king at Canterbury Cathedral. And as soon after he had died, the followers of the church made him into a martyr, thus leading to Pope Alexander canonizing him. With this event now in motion, the entire monarchy system began to have a major setback.
