La Boca means mouth in Spanish, it is named this because the city is placed at the mouth of the river that runs alongside. Although the area can be sketchy at night, this iconic, bohemian city is a crafty attraction. Before this city became such a popular tourist attraction, it originated as a port for immigrants to come in through. La Boca is so eye catching due to its colorful buildings and old structures. La Boca is sometimes referred to as artist colony because of all the murals painted throughout the city, making it so visually appealing. Growing up and being raised far away from my country of birth, Mexico, I believe being Hispanic is not just a title I hold for being born in a Latin American country or that is based on how I look, how I dress, or how I act, but rather is keeping the history, my native language, the tradition and culture of my home country alive in me. Coming to this country at a young age did not allow me to enjoy the lifestyle of a “true” Mexican or Hispanic, but that didn’t stop me from learning the culture and the drive to expose my Hispanic background to others. I believe having the knowledge of not only my home country, but of other Latin American countries has helped me identify myself more with the Hispanic community. Because being Hispanic is a form of unity because it does not only mean that you are pure Mexican, Salvadorian, Columbian, or Spaniard, but it’s all together that we help define the Hispanic culture. It’s being multilingual and multicultural that makes us stand out. This is what makes us feel in family, that even though we don’t all come from the same country we share a beautiful language, we share the music, the art, and the food.…
