Do you know what a quinceanera is? Maybe not. Well today you are going to learn about the making of a quinceanera. The making of a quinceanera starts with planning. A latina has to start planning her party ahead of time which might be a year. The first thing she has to look for is her venue which is the place her party is going to be at. Once she has her venue, she has to look for her godparents. Her godparents are the ones who will help her out with some of the things she will need for her party. Sometimes she will have godparents for everything. Then once she has all the godparents she wants she will need to look for her dress.…
The American holiday of Halloween and the Spanish holiday Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead might have some differences but are similar holidays. Three reasons that the 2 holidays have differences but are very similar are skeletons, masks, and food. Día de los Muertos is a holiday that starts on October 31 and ends on November 2. It is for spending time with family and celebrate/ honor the people that have died. The two holidays have a lot of similar things that help the people celebrate.…
Throughout the late 1920’s many American patrons of the arts had attempted to bring the famous Mexican muralist, Diego Rivera, to the United States for commissioned works. It wasn’t until September of 1930 that Rivera finally arrived in San Francisco to paint. His wife, the famous painter Frida Khalo, whom he had recently married, accompanied him. Fellow artist and instructor at the California Academy of Arts, Ralph Stackpole, had recommended to Timothy Pflueger that he use Rivera for a new project he was working on, the Pacific Stock Exchange. This turned out to be a fruitful relationship with the successful completion of Allegory of California, in the stock exchange building. Nearly 10 years later and his last appearance in the US, Pflueger asked Rivera to return to San Francisco to be part of Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939/40. The fruit of those laborers is his Pan American Unity, the themes of which will be explored in further detail here.…
The similarities between the Haitian and Spanish American Revolutions is that they were started by creoles and neither in the beginning supported abolishment of slavery. Both revolutions were heavily influenced by the Enlightenment ideas. Creole came up with the new ideas from the Enlightenment, such as ideas of human rights and justice. The Haitian Revolution and the Spanish American Revolutions were due to social inequalities. Each declared independence as a result, and later they both had a break down in economic status, due to lack of labor.…
In the Hispanic culture, the significance of having a quinceanera is to show a girl becoming a young lady, to thank god for all he has done and to show her off to her family and friends. It is a very religious ceremony. It is traditional for the Quinceanera to choose special friends to be apart of what is called the Court of Honor. Usually, these people are her closest friends, her brothers, sisters, cousins: The people she mostly honors. In the Quinceanera's Court of Honor all the young girls are called damas and all the young men are called Chambelanes. A quinceanera always starts off with going to church and having a mass to give thanks to god then right after a reception is held to celebrate with family and friends. In an American culture, the significance is the same to show a girl's coming of age. Even though it is not as religious as a quinceanera, a sweet sixteen is an important rite of passage that celebrates approaching adulthood and is usually celebrated with a big part. "While sweet sixteen celebrations lack the religious influence of other coming-of-age celebrations, some traditions do surface" writes Kiri Picone. As seen on TV shows like "My super sweet sixteen" a tradition of receiving a car is shown to represent having responsibilities. Unlike in a quinceanera, a sweet sixteen doesn’t really have a court of honor, well some might but its not really called anything its just a group of her closets friends to share the spotlight with. Interestingly, many families today are merging their Hispanic and America heritages by choosing to celebrate a combination of both a quinceanera and a sweet sixteen.…
A quinceañera is a Hispanic culture event that many girls look forward to, it’s a symbol of reaching womanhood. In order, to do ethnography I will use participant observation and semi-structure research. A quinceañera relates to cultural anthropology because culture is learned and shared knowledge that is passed from generations to generations. Also, it symbolizes something to a culture. I feel like me and my siblings follow more the American tradition than our parent’s tradition. I look forward to this because I’ll get to understand and be able to participate in my own family…
culture represent The appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe to the Aztec Indian Juan Diego in December of 1531 generated the conversion of Mexico and Latin America to Catholicism.2 Indeed, the Blessed Virgin Mary entered the very life stream of Central America and became an inextricable part of Mexican life and a central figure to the history of Mexico itself. The three most important religious celebrations in Central and South America are Christmas, Easter, and December 12, the feast-day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Her appearance in the center of the American continents has contributed to the Virgin of Guadalupe being given the title "Mother of America." (?Christopher Rengers?).…
El Norte, a 1983 film directed by Gregory Nava, depicts the life of two indigenous teenagers who flee their native country, Guatemala, in search for a better life in America. The reason for fleeing is due to the ethnic and political oppression of the Guatemalan Civil War. The film builds up a strong connection shared between Enrique and Rosa, one of genuine feeling and fierce emotion. This connection is foregrounded by the exaggerated style and is often compared to adulterated relations among Hispanics. Such a differentiation is proposed to underline the strain on the social connection created by the financial aspects of migration. In both Enrique’s and Rosa’s hopes of pursuing the “American Dream”, their fantasies of a better life are both…
Hello, my name is Lexie. I am about to turn 15 years old. This means I finally get to have my Quinceanera! You may be wondering, “What is a Quinceanera?”. A Quinceanera is a Hispanic tradition that celebrates a young girl’s coming of age. I may live in America, but my family is HIspanic. My dad is from South America, and my mom is from Mexico. I can’t wait to be able to celebrate my Hispanic heritage! Another question you may have is, “Why do Hispanics have a Quinceanera?”. The Quinceanera celebrates a young girl’s (Me!) and acknowledges her journey from childhood to womanhood. “What happens at a Quinceanera?’, you ask? Well, a Quinceanera has customs based on God, family, friends, food, dance, and music. The festivities welcome religious traditions, responsibility, and family virtues. The Quinceanera begins with a religious ceremony. Then, there is a reception held in the home of the family or a place where parties are usually held. During a reception, there is food, music, and there may even be a waltz or dance performed by the Quinceanera and her Court. The Court of Honor is a thing where the…

However, the Spanish crusaders came along and in their attempt to turn the Mexican people Catholic, affected the celebrations. Catholicism actively denies death while the Mexican traditions do not. Because of the two cultures being brought so near each other, it was inevitable that Mexican traditions would change even if only very slightly. The Mexican traditions did not change very much because the Spanish Christians have very similar celebrations on the same days, but for the most part, they stayed the same.…
As a shy teenage girl with two left feet and a fear of dancing in public, I felt that dancing at a friend’s quinceanera as a member of her court of honor was going to be the worst experience of my life. After my mother gave me the news that she had volunteered me to be a dama de honor, I immediately complained about having to dance with a group of strangers for 5 months in preparation for the dance performance in front of about 200 people. For the first month I reluctantly attended every practice, and the most communication I had with the rest of the court members were a few mumbles once in a while. But as the day of the quinceanera approached, I became more comfortable with the other members of the court and even befriended some of them. I…
It's tradition to have a quinceañera when a girl turns fifteen in the Hispanic culture. The reason for that is to celebrate the coming of womanhood and maturity. Well it's beem like that over a long period of time, and even though that tradition is still happening today, the purpose of that tradition has pretty much faded.…
A lot of people recognize that Nicaragua and the United States are two different countries, but they don’t really know how different they truly are. The health care system, the education, lifestyle and human rights in Nicaragua are very different from the United States. Nicaragua is located in Central America and is known for having active volcanoes and sharks swimming in fresh water, but Nicaragua is also known for being the third poorest country in the world and a country who has suffered many wars, catastrophic earthquakes and devastating hurricanes. Most Nicaraguan people don’t live an extravagant life, some of them don’t have access to healthcare, and poverty is often Nicaraguan’s biggest enemy and an impediment towards a much brighter future. The United States is a country known for its independence, freedom and perhaps power. United States is a country where equal opportunities are respected, people can study what they like, good services are given, and everyone enjoys life with a purpose of becoming successful while achieving many personal goals. The American dream may not necessarily be fame, wealth or a lavish home but a good education, access to healthcare and the freedom to practice any religion you want or none at all. In the United States there are no limitations, people can dream big, people can find their true identities without being criticized or beaten down and people don’t have to pay their debts with jail time but instead they are giving the opportunity to file bankruptcy and start all over again.…
