organize as a society and allows us to consider one’s self. Another reason that mediums or technology change our culture and world quicker than ever is that content is comparatively slow, ideas are slower, and technology faster in communicating. To explain, ideas and content are like erosion, they are powerful and unstoppable but slow. And mediums are earth quakes they are dramatic and reshape the land scape overnight. McLuhan points out, “it is only too typical that the “content” of any medium blinds us to the character of the medium” (p.9). In other terms, arguments about ides should ever be fully divorced from the mediums by which those ideas are delivered and the character of those mediums. Because it effects more than just the way that the medium is reshaped, our physical lives, culture, technologies, and society reshape the very nature of the content that is delivered. How we communicate with each other defines who we are and holds accountability to our culture. The message technologies create allow for a new stage of interaction and connection with other people though we do not realize the effects that it will have on culture. The effect of the medium becomes the blue print and builds integration to society. These effects are McLuhan’s message. In Tom Wolfe’s non-fiction novel, “Electric Kool-Aid Acid …show more content…
Therefore, its importance is the existence of YouTube itself. YouTube and other media sites alter the medium’s ability to get to the root of how we think about ourselves and our ability to interact with the world. From popup windows, chat rooms, blog posts, and links to follow to obtain more details – seemingly offering more but leaving the reader with less. Carr elaborates on this point by making the comparison of a deep sea scuba diver who emerges himself into the ocean to observe the beauty of nature, as he previously engaged in research in the library, walking up and down the aisles, hunting down the appropriate materials to dive into. Now, with the birth of the Internet, the hunting has become more like surveying the scenery. No longer submerged deep within the ocean as Carr states, “Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a jet ski” (Carr, 2008). Carr explains it is no longer necessary to comb through shelves of books but to simply access what is needed and jump from link to link. Similar to a rock skipping across a pond, the internet allows the consumer to skim through seemingly endless amounts of information. This convenience however, comes with a price. Marshall McLuhan, media theorist points out that media is responsible for shaping our thoughts, minds, and ability to process details (Carr, 2008). Carr illustrates McLuhan’s point effectively throughout his piece with descriptive examples and elaborates how the Internet has weakened our ability to…

This quote relates to it, as it says, “In the past people used technology as a tool for making survival an easier endeavor. Nowadays we are witnessing a shift in the role technology is playing in our society and may continue to play for generations to come. In the modern-day world technology is no longer a tool for survival but it turned to a means of communication and entertainment. Mass communication technology has made it easier than ever to connect with people. At the same time this raises the concern of whether technology has a good or bad influence on our society, is the use of technology destroying face-to-face interaction and communication between people?”. Technology is used a lot more than necessary and time is going by a lot faster because of all the time spent on…

Clive Thompson, in his chapter excerpt “Public Thinking,” from the book Smarter Than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds For the Better published by Penguin Group, argues that the development of technology of mass communication improves the user’s writing and their ability to collaborate. To support his argument, he incorporates statistics to show the enormity of the production of writing, anecdotes to connect with the reader’s emotions, experiments to support the claim that people perform better in front of an audience, Stanford Study of Writing to support the claim that students are writing more than before and history to debate how the scientific progress would have been furthered with the current ability to collaborate. His purpose is to explain how technology improved the users’ thinking and writing in order to convince his audience that it has made people more intelligent. Thompson adopts an informal tone for his audience of students and parents by using simple language and pronouns.…

According to the past generation, the younger current generation has difficulty forming “authentic relationships” due to the fact that technology is inhibiting their social skills. Each generation has a different view of technology because of the fact that the current generation grew up with technology, while the previous generation did not. In Malcolm Gladwell’s “Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted,” the author speaks of the fact that technology is beneficial, but he also sees how it is demolishing the current generation's ability to communicate as the older generation did. Because Gladwell had grown up without technology, he only sees the corruption of it. Like Gladwell, Sherry Turkle’s “Alone Together,” brings…

Our metaphors create the content of our culture.”(Postman) Media is the message. What we know of the content is the metaphor. Languages are our media. Metaphors create content of our culture. McLuhan once said, “Media now matters more than the message.” Image is also more important that your message. The infamous Miley Cyrus name is always circulating in the tabloids. It is not because of her message, but because of her wild wardrobe that causes her popularity. Image is the first thing that we think of when we think of a person. We now live in a world full of distraction that deters us from the more important things. For the past years, the linear literary mind or typographic mind has been the norm. Reading, writing, communicating clearly has been what everyone has been use…

In the Frontline video titled Digital Nation, Rachel Dretzin and Douglas Rushkoff explored the impact of digital media on today’s society. In the video they cover everything from it’s impact on the brain, to it’s impact on students, to it’s impact on the military. Nothing is spared in this investigation on the effect of digital media, and growing up in a wired world. However the main thing I managed to take away from this film was it has had a dramatic effect on human abilities and communication, which I will be discussing in the following paragraphs.…

The two arguments, “Mind Over Mass Media” by Steven Pinker and “Our Semi-Literate youth? Not So Fast” by Andrea Lunsford, are giving their opinions on whether the affect of domination of technology is hindering our mental abilities. Though they may have their differences, they both come to the conclusion that if anything, new forms of media and technology are doing more good than bad. Overall, both authors make valid arguments, however the use of Lunsford’s ethos, pathos, and logos make her argument stronger.…
