Empathy Frank Dutch Analysis
The term empathy is the ability to understand or feel the other person’s feelings. In the lines of Steve Dutch he doesn’t give any empathy. Dutch implies that students claim to know the material, but they not do well on exams. He believes that if you can’t answer the questions about the material you don’t know the material. I strongly disagree with Dutch’s argument of the line “I know the material- I just don’t do well on exams”, because many people have anxiety, different ways of learning, and the way questions are asked. Dutch is only giving his opinion of the situation his not facing in facts.
Anxiety is one of the main reasons I disagree with Steve Dutch. Before staring a test or even during the test there are feelings of worry. Anxiety can be different in every person. Anxiety can be caused by fear of failing, the lack of preparation, and poor test history. Anxiety and depression association of America (ADAA) explains three types of symptoms physical, emotional and behavioral/cognitive symptoms. Physical symptoms are more like headaches, nauseas, excessive sweating, and rapid heartbeat. Emotional symptoms are feeling angry, disappointed and, fearful. Lastly the

A learning style is the way in which a person processes new information. In the learning system there are three main types of learning which are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. People may learn best by being taught with the three learning methods, but others may not. Visual learners are people who learn by seeing. These people learn more where there are images, graphs, diagrams, and colors involved. Visual learners are learners that first have to see what they are expected to know. Auditory learners learn best by hearing. Lastly, there is the kinesthetic learners, also known as tactile learners, those learners learn best by the physical activity. In a class the students’ way of learning might not be the way the professor

In “On Compassion” Barbara Lazear shows three main examples on how people in the Manhattan area show compassion for the homeless people in their community. After she gives the three main examples she then goes on to question whether they are actually showing compassion or if they are showing pity, care, or simply just selfishness. She also goes on to wondering if the people who are doing good things for the homeless people in the community are doing them just out of fear itself. One example of this is when the lady with the stroller gives a homeless man money while he is staring at her baby, she brings up the point that she may have just given him the money so he wouldn’t do anything to her or her baby. While wrapping up the end of the story she discusses how she believes that compassion is not something that someone is born with but rather something that you have to learn throughout your life.…

Learning styles are techniques to help enhance quality of learning. They are useful in problem solving and communication. They help process the information in different ways. There are multiple styles of learning that vary in numerous ways. Evaluating and exploring your own style will provide useful information to help enhance your quality of learning. Because we tend to use different learning styles in different situations, most of us have a mix of learning styles. One of the most popular guides to learning styles is a model developed in 1987 by Neil Fleming, a teacher from New Zealand. This guide is called VARK. The word VARK is an acronym. V, represents visual learning, like using pictures and graphs or charts. A, auditory learning, which consists of lectures, music, discussions. R, and K, for kinesthetic learning, which includes hands-on activities. This paper will address the diversity of learning styles, and how identifying and interpreting your own style may boost the quality of learning you receive.…

You can’t just open a book and judge the story on the random chapter you happened to end up on, you start from the beginning and read the full story. Empathy is just like that. Empathy is like reading someone else’s story: being one with the characters and events and feeling the emotions of the main character, observing, listening, and understanding. When you read someone’s story is when the solution of racism and prejudices within communities is really possible. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird the author, Harper Lee, shows empathy is the solution to the prejudice and racism that has unfortunately afflicted America throughout its history. These characters include Scout, Atticus, Miss Caroline, Boo…

A learning style simply means how one learns and remembers information. Visual, auditory, or kinesthetic are the different learning styles. Learning styles can greatly go with personality, for instance a visual learner is usually neat and organized, while a kinesthetic learner is not so organized and impulsive. The visual learner thinks with pictures, likes to write things down, and can usually retain information easily. The auditory learner listens to information best and can usually verbalize and tell stories. Finally, the kinesthetic learner is a hands-on learner, likes to move around, and usually does not like to read directions. A teacher needs to recognize what type of learner each student is to understand how the student processes…

Learning styles theory originated in the 1970’s and is based around the idea that people have preferences about how they like to learn. Theorists believe that each individual has a particular learning style that is best suited to them and allows them to collect and process information successfully in order to learn. The principle idea is that these learning style differ from one individual to the next and theorists argue that school teachers should incorporate these learning styles into their lessons so that student is catered for and everyone can learn effectively. Many educationalists believe that differences in learning styles are responsible for some student difficulties, for example, if a student is taught…

Several definitions of learning styles currently exist. According to Fleming and Mills (1992) in their study of learning styles Teaching and Learning Styles: VARK Strategies, they included reading and writing as a category. If a person is a visual learner, for example, he or she prefers learning by observing and enjoys demonstrations, pictures, films and videos. Auditory learners, on the other hand, prefer to listen, read aloud, and talk to themselves and learn best through the use of discussion groups. The tactile learner, a subset of the kinesthetic learner, learns by touching. A tactile learner will learn concepts best by tracing his or her fingers over symbols or patterns and by writing on surfaces with his or her fingers. Unlike the others, the kinesthetic learner learns best through physical movement. They have to do it to learn it. They will walk when studying, take notes, rewrite notes, and usually enjoy role playing.…

According to the dictionary, empathy is defined as “the understanding of another’s situation, feelings, and motives”. I find it difficult to understand that a person could lack such consideration and compassion for another living creature, but, clearly, I have seen otherwise. On many occasions, I have witnessed disconcerting behavior both aimed at myself, or other individuals and have questioned the our society's complacent moral standards. For as long as I can remember, my ability to treat others with kindness has been second nature, and a vital part in my moral practices and beliefs. Faced with many challenges during my childhood, my empathetic disposition was not only enhanced, but, undoubtedly, the strongest building block in my ethical…

Empathy is being able to feel and understand what another person is going through or what they have experienced. Empathy is used as a noun, the dictionary meaning for empathy is the intellectual identification with or vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another. After the first few units, I was getting a clearer visual of what learning styles can be considered as. Learning styles are defined as the different ways in which people learn. Some people have one or two different learning methods. Not only did I find out what type of learning styles can be learned, I figured out what learning styles I have. My preferred learning style is Kinesthetic/Visual. A Kinesthetic/Visual learning has helped me to process new information in my school setting. Knowing and understanding my preferred learning style allows me to be flexible and take responsibility for my learning.…

Learning style is one of important factor that comes from student’s motivation to increase their enthusiasm in learning process. Learning style is characteristic cognitive, affective, and psychological behaviors that serve as relatively stable indicators of how learners perceive, interact with, and respond to the learning environment. Everyone has his/her own style on learning which can also vary from one situation to another (Kanninenn, 2009). The better one is aware of his/her learning style, the better he/she can use it as a method to absorb the information in learning process and to get greater achievement and personal satisfaction.…

Maintaining a capacity for empathy in contrast to pitying the pain of others creates a mirroring effect of compassion with potential to reach countless individuals beyond oneself. A disconnect lies within the use of sympathy to connect to others who are struggling and can often create a patronizing infliction that belittles the individual’s pain. Every individual fights a complex battle throughout their life, and the weapons to win one’s war can often be found in the advice from those who are willing to take the step to relate to another’s level. In the past three months, persisting through a challenge has allowed me to obtain an ability to give back to others that are dealing with similar feelings of discontent by sharing methods I used to bring myself out of confusion in my studies. By empathizing to the hardships…

Empathy is described in Webster’s dictionary as, “the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner”. In my personal opinion empathy is simply putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. When we are able to fully understand and comprehend what someone else is feeling we can be effective listeners and provide them with all the attention that they require. Empathy is an important skill that we need to master to be effective in many fields. In the field of psychology, empathy is a crucial skill that needs to be mastered. In psychology, you are constantly listening to the problems of others and you really need to show empathy to the patients so that they know, they are being fully comprehended. When we are speaking to our friends we have put ourselves in their shoes to reassure them that we care. “Empathic listening is a way of listening and responding to another person that improves mutual understanding and trust. It is an essential skill for third parties and disputants alike, as it enables the listener to receive and accurately interpret the speaker's message, and then provide an appropriate response” (Salem, 2003). When one listens empathically we are providing others with a new level of trust, which in turn can lead to better relationships with others. Empathy is being able to express through verbal and non-verbal expressions that we are truly focused and understanding what an individual is expressing to us. “To effectively experience empathy requires the development of several skills and attitudes including imagination, open-mindedness, and commitment”. (Alberts, 2009)…
