In particular the disposition of positive affectivity and negative affectivity have been found to be important antecedents to attitudes about one’s job. Research finds that people with a positive affectivity tend to perform better and have a higher work satisfaction than their negative counterparts. Work satisfaction has significant influence over employee performance, absenteeism and employee turnover. It also has strong relation with employee’s health, on job accidents, grievances and stress. A person with high work satisfaction can be perceived as being happy in his job and work environment. A higher job satisfaction quotient inculcates a positive attitude towards the job and the organization. Thus increasing work satisfaction is critical

Based on the current body of knowledge the following evidence based guidelines may help enhance job satisfaction. 1. Make jobs more fun 2. Have fair play, benefits and promotion opportunities 3. Match people with jobs that fit their interests and skills 4. Design jobs to make them exciting and satisfying
Chade Meng Tan brings yet another innovative technique to increase job satisfaction ,overall happiness and general well-being. He believes that a high emotional intelligence enables three skill sets. 1. Stellar Work Performance 2. Outstanding leadership 3. The ability to create the conditions for happiness
Thus developing a high emotional intelligence can result in modifying and cultivating a positive attitude in a person thus benefit from its resulting advantages. Based on Chade Meng Tan’s approach a high job satisfaction can be attained by developing mindfulness which is used to train a quality of attention that is strong in clarity and stability. When such attention is directed towards the physiological aspects of emotion, we can perceive the emotional expeircen with high vividness and resolution which in turn allows to build the foundation of emotional intelligence.

    With the publication of Daniel Goleman’s book Emotional Intelligence in 1995, the business world got an answer to a question that had been plaguing it for decades: “Why did some people of a high IQ struggle at managing teams while other leaders of lower IQ excel at it”? Goleman asserted that the traditional measurement of IQ (intelligence quotient) was not enough to determine a good leader. Schools and universities concentrated on developing the cognitive and analytical part of the brain, while the teaching of how the emotional side of the brain worked was ignored. Goleman defined this “emotional intelligence” of a human being as a set of competencies that distinguish how one manages feelings and interacts with others. These emotional intelligence competencies are divided into two categories: personal and social. Personal competencies are how we manage our self and our own feelings, and social competencies are how we manage our inter-personal relationships. There are three basic personal competencies: knowing one’s emotions, managing emotions, and motivating one’s self. The two basic social competencies are recognizing emotions in others and handling relationships. Mastering these competencies, in addition to having sufficient IQ intelligence, makes for a truly effective leader. Thankfully for all of us, Goleman asserts that emotional intelligence can be obtained by understanding what the five competencies are and then developing one’s skills in using them.…

    Since the emergence of emotional intelligence as a theoretical construct in the work of Salovey and Mayer (1989) there has been much debate surrounding its precise definition (Spector and Johnson, 2006).
