In this assignment I am going to research about empowerment and how you can empower children in different ways especially through effective communication.
According to Bruce and Meggitt (1999)
“Empowerment is closely linked to advocacy. In case of children with special needs, the adult should undertake activities with the child which will empower (or enable) the child to make his own wishes known by helping with communication, giving the child choice and decision making skills.”
In my setting we do a lot to empower children and families so that they can get the best they can while being in their nursery school setting. You have to ensure that you listen to families on what they would like for their child, that’s why open evenings/days are so important so that parents can see what the school offers.
There are three important principals that we need to talk about closely when it comes to empowering adults and children in any childcare settings. Firstly it is to be able to respect the individual differences of each child for example a child could be from a different country/background/religion so I have to ensure that the setting/staff works towards the needs of this child. For example this child could have a language barrier and not be able to talk English so it’s important that we have picture ques to show this child what we need him to do. In my setting we have a Chinese child who talks very little English sometimes he runs inside so we usually have to bring him over to are picture chart which shows a child walking inside. Also in my setting we respect individual
