Empty nest syndrome is a feeling that parents have when their children leave the house for the first time. It is a feeling of grief, sadness and loneliness and is not a syndrome that could be termed a clinical condition. This usually happens when children leave their house for the first time and go away for either college, work or to start to live by themselves. Even though children leaving their homes to make their own lives are in fact a very healthy event, parents are often left with symptoms that cannot be diagnosed easily. Frequently observed symptoms are depression and a loss of purpose for the parents. The house tends to become more silent as the days pass. This syndrome is shown commonly and more intensely in full- time mothers, and comparatively less in the fathers/men.

Parents suffering from this syndrome can start to ease their stress by pursuing their own hobbies and their interests in the increased amount of spare time that they have. Other ways can be discussing their grief and problems with each other, close friends, family or other professionals. Many experts have advised to keep a journal, or start working again if they were full-time parents as it will help to keep them occupied.
