Endangered Species Report The endangered animal I picked was the Ailuropoda melanoleuca. The common name is the Giant Panda. They are playful, poor breeders, and they are becoming extinct because of many things. The giant panda is a earthy animal and primarily spends its life roaming forests and eating bamboo. They climb trees and they also use trees or openings in rock for shelter. Giant pandas do not have permanent dens though. Because they do not have permanent dens, pandas don't hibernate. Instead like other animals, they move to other places with warmer temperatures. Pandas use mostly spatial memory over visual. People believe that pandas are poor breeders. This is thought because of the disappointing reproductive performance of captive pandas. However, wild panda populations, involved in long-term studies, are known to have reproductive rates comparable to those of some populations of American black bears. This is a good thing because the black bears are thriving. Giant pandas are usually on their own, unless it is during the mating season and while rearing a cub. During the March– May breeding season, females may breed with multiple males. The giant panda lives in a few mountain ranges in central China. They mainly live in Sichuan province, but they also live in Shaanxi and Gansu areas. As a result of farming, deforestation, and other causes, the panda has been driven out of the lowland areas where they had once lived in. Bamboo is the primary food source for Giant Panda Bears. By eating bamboo, the pandas contribute to an important step in the chain of bamboo. Panda bears take in bamboo seeds from many different plants and spread these seeds over a wide area. The dissemination of seeds from panda poop helps to increase the bamboo distribution. Also helps the healthy generations of the plant.
