Every day Nicky got up and explored the river, the fields, and even in the trees; he was always exploring something. This is one way that shows how he was adapting to this new environment with his grandma. He was taking in all the great things of nature. An important time that drove Nicky's love for exploring was when he helped a fawn out of the mud on the river bank, "It barely moved. I pulled again, then again. "She brought out a big sketchpad and a pouch filled with thick pencils and crayons. 'I’ve been saving these just for you' she said." This was the start of Nicky's drawings, his grandma once more encouraged him to do what she did. Therefore she was leading him to become more like a river rat. He drew animals that he saw in the forest with the pencils and a book from his grandma. In another incident Nicky's grandma helped him color in his first drawing. She took him step by step of what to do, I feel like this scene really triggered Nicky's mind to be like her. Lastly Nicky's grandma hung all of his drawings next to hers from sketches to finished products, while all of the drawings ended up on the same board.
