Big Enterprise Resource Planning or ERP vendors include companies like SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft. These ERP vendors, specifically Oracle and SAP, are known for their expansive ERP software solutions built with robust functionality for large fortune 500 customers. However, as the economy changes and technology evolves, ERP vendors change their way of doing things. Today, unlike the past, ERP vendors are focusing on small and medium size business solutions. SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft all have small business Enterprise Resource Planning software solutions. And, these ERP vendors compete with each other for small business ERP customers. Other examples of ERP Vendor solutions would be Compuware’s Change-point and Open- Air PSA focus primarily on professional services organizations, and are typically marketed to the small to medium business (SMB) market. These offerings vary in breadth and depth, and the vendors tend to target a few key vertical markets. Depending on the vendor, their business models are diverse and can deliver software as a service (SaaS) and license models to their clients.
Examples of open-source ERP software would be Plex online which utilizes cloud computing to deliver a complete solution for manufacturers with no hardware or software purchases. Production management, inventory management, quality management, human capital management, and financial management are all available via a web browser. Plex Online's integrated quality and traceability functions have driven widespread adoption in a cross section quality-driven manufacturing industries. Another example would be Sequoia ERP; open taps (which stands for Open Source Enterprise Applications Suite) was built to create an out of the box ERP and CRM solution for the Apache OFBiz project. The product suite is wide and includes financials, distribution, manufacturing and point of sale (POS).
