Have you ever been to a place where you considered yourself a stranger?
Growing up in a different country for 14 years, I have adapted a whole new lifestyle, where everything seems to be in an instant. As I stepped out of the airport, I was scared & clueless with what Manila had to offer me. The people moving in ceaseless motion, cars honking through every sound on the road and the weather surprising you with the unpredictable conditions – everything seems new to me. During my first days in Manila, I have been isolating myself from everything for the fact that I’m not brave enough to venture out on my own. After those weeks of enrolling myself to the university that I have been given a chance to study upon my course, my parents
decided to finally trust me in living on my own. I would lock myself in my dorm feeling homesick but there came a time when I had the unexpected guts to step out of the doorsteps. That’s when the adventure begins.
The only thing that mattered to me during that time was the company of my friends who grew up with me back abroad. I admit, Manila seems to be bigger than usual but you’ll get used to it. That was May 2012 when I went out to meet up with my high school friends at the busy streets of Espanya. The smiles on our faces were unexplainable as our eyes met. That meet up was followed by endless adventures filled with bittersweet memories to reminisce about. In a span of one month, I was able to experience the walls of Intramuros, wild drunk nights at Metrowalk, streets of Bonifacio Global City, sleepovers at condominiums, endless dining at the restaurants of Makati, green sceneries of Los Banos Laguna, extreme rides at Star City, historical monuments at Rizal Park, “kalesa” rides at Binondo and lastly, the literally breath-taking MRT and LRT rides.
After being unknown to the place I have been moving in, I found myself amidst all the experiences we’ve been through. We knew that, that vacation was not meant to last forever, but the memories we were able to build together would always linger. I guess, going on adventures and breaking some rules may not seem bad at all. After all, life is full of uncertainties so take chances and experience what life has to offer.
