Essay of Evaluation - The Hobbit Over 100 million copies of The Hobbit have been sold nationwide, making it one of the most popular high fantasy novels in history. J.R.R. Tolkien does a magnificent job defining the characters and developing the plot, giving his style of writing a distinct feel. With its perilous journeys through Middle Earth, mysterious magic, mythical creatures, and intense battle scenes, this exciting adventure is sure to intrigue any reader. The main character of the story is Bilbo Baggins. He is a mythical creature called a hobbit that lives in a peaceful shire where excitement and adventure are only for the delusional. Tolkien does a wonderful job of developing his personality from small and timid to curious and brave throughout the adventure, making him grow into the hobbit we see in the trilogy, Lord of the Rings. He gives the dwarves that accompany Bilbo during the journey very interesting personalities, making the story even more entertaining to read. The antagonist, a furious dragon named Smaug, is given a sardonic sense of humor and a greed for gold, making interactions with him interesting but tense. Overall, all the characters in The Hobbit, no matter how important or minor, are described carefully. The characters are an important part in a story, and Tolkien makes sure they are interesting in their own ways which gives the story a unique depth. The plot is typical fantasy; there is a hero who is underestimated, a fortune to win, and a dragon to defeat. Though it might seem predictable, Tolkien develops the plot and makes some twists along the adventure that still makes the story very exciting. One very important turn of events is when Bilbo finds a magic ring that makes anyone who wears it invisible. Another example is when the dwarves are captured by the wood-elves.
