Essay On Hydration
Several researchers published an empirical article called the “Comparison of the Effects of Hydration with Water or Isotonic Solution on the Recovery of Cardiac Autonomic Modulation”. The purpose of this study was to determine the importance of hydrating after strenuous activity. The ideal time that someone hydrates by drinking water, Gatorade, or any other sport drink is unclear. The researchers do know, however, that hydration helps with tolerance to strenuous activity because it helps regulate the body’s temperature and maintains physiological functions. There are many different ways that someone can be hydrated. Typically, people think of water but there are other isotonic solutions such as Gatorade, coconut water, and pure sodium chloride solution (Marques Vanderlei, Moreno, Marques Vanderlei, Pastre, de Abreu, …show more content…
Although this is my first year not competing or being on a team, I still considered myself an athlete. Even though I have been taught and educated on the importance of staying hydrated, I am the type of person that hardly ever drinks water or other beverages. One of the worst feelings is not being able to recover after a workout and I have felt that from time to time. I never thought that it could be because of my hydration habits. But, after reading this article, I believe I have found the cause. I need to stay hydrated especially when I am working out. This article has hopefully influenced my brain and body enough to realize that this is something that I need to do because I want to be healthy and strong. This article also relates to the general public. I have noticed that society and the media are making a push towards educating people on staying hydrated. I believe that this is an amazing idea because our society needs these healthy tips. Everyone needs to learn about the importance of drinking plenty of water or isotonic solutions after a workout, practice, or strenuous

Robert Cade from the University of Florida in 1965. He had discovered that the athletes of a losing team were weak because of two main things that were not being replaced because of sweat, electrolytes and fluids. (Note 1.) Electrolytes help your brain control your muscles and body fluids, and when the main electrolytes are lost with the sweat, it delays communication. (Note 2) In a Gatorade Thirst Quencher there is 160 mg Sodium/ 45 mg Potassium to replace the sodium and potassium that has been lost. It also contains 21g of carbs, with 80 calories. (Note 7) When doing any type of physical activity, it is important to make sure that you are hydrated. You want to avoid nausea, fatigueness, dizziness, etc. (Note…

Gatorade is formulated to rehydrate and replenish fluid, carbohydrates and electrolytes as well as to "quench your thirst." According to Wikipedia, "Gatorade is the official sports drink of NASCAR, the NFL, MLB, NBA, WNBA, USA Basketball, NHL, Association of Volleyball Professionals, US Soccer Federation, Major League Soccer, High School Sports Teams, and the Chelsea F.C. in the UK." It's no wonder why so many people choose it as their go-to drink. I make sure to always have at least one case at my house. My hypothesis is if sport drinks are consumed, then the reaction rate will improve. Sport drinks provide individuals with the required amount of water, carbohydrates and electrolytes (sodium and potassium) which is lost in sweat while exercising. Maintaining adequate electrolyte levels will enable better cell function, which is needed for muscle endurance, among other bodily capabilities when exercising. On the other end Glucose is an important source of energy, and water balance is required to maintain blood pressure and proper tissue functions. Even though water contains the required amounts of sodium and potassium, water…

Hyponatremia is even more susceptible to happen to athletes. When we are under physical stress, to which athletes experience during games, our hypothalamus produces antidiuretic hormone secreted into our blood stream by our pituitary gland sending messages to our kidneys to hold the secretion of water. The conserved water plus the excessive amount we drink during that time will lead to exercise-associated hyponatremia or also known as EAH (Joseph Verbalis, Georgetown University Medical Center Chaiman of Medicine).…

The major reason anyone drinks fluid before, during and after physical activity is to replace the water that is lost through sweat. If the water isn't replaced dehydration will occur and performance will be hampered. The purpose of Gatorade and other sports drinks is to help rehydrate your body quickly and help improve performance and productivity. This is accomplished through a well balanced mix of water, sugar (carbohydrates) and salts (electrolytes), the major ingredients in most sports drinks. These ingredients, combined with a variety of fruit flavors, create pleasant tasting drinks that according to the companies are suppose to help your athletic performance. Three major problems we face every day from physical exertion is the loss of water and electrolytes, elevation of body temperature and depletion or energy reserves. If the sports drinks work as advertised they should be able to help us avoid those three problems.…

This means less oxygen for muscles and the brain, causing a significant loss in cognition and energy. In 2005 Susan Shirreffs analyzed several studies related to athletic performance and hydration. The results of these studies vividly illustrate how dehydration impairs all aspects of athletics. Experiments were conducted that had athletes run for several miles at certain levels of hydration and dehydration. Shirreffs found that with as little as a two percent reduction in body mass due to water loss athletes performed significantly worse as their dehydration continued. Not only did dehydration cause a reduction in athleticism, but it was found motivation to exercise was influenced (2011). This is due to waters affect on endurance and blood flow. Without proper hydration blood flow is slowed and less oxygen is carried throughout the muscles. This causes significant and noticeable pain due to the cramping of muscles and the lessening of joint lubrication. Athletes studied with proper hydration were found to perform at much higher standards and with increased motivation. This means that by drinking water athletic performance can be increased exponentially (Kalman, 2010; Keneflick, 2012). All studies in this article point towards hydration being a critical factor for athletes to perform efficiently. Also, studies were cited that concluded hydration has a…
