Essay On Kokoda Challenge
What makes us healthy as a person? This is one of life’s questions that has no right or wrong answer. Health means something different to each and every one of us, and I am using my Kokoda challenge medal to portray my definition of health. I believe that to remain healthy during our lifetime, the mind needs to be capable of having the motivation to overcome mental challenges, whether that be in day to day life, in the workplace or a personal challenge. I chose my Kokoda medal as my artefact because I believe that it demonstrates this definition of health. The Kokoda Challenge is a 96km endurance event, which not only a challenge physically but also mentally. This can be linked to the medical industry, in particular the recovery process, where the body not only needs to recover physically but also mentally. This medal portrays my belief of the two main features that makes us healthy; mental health and motivation. I will be further discussing these two health indicators and how the challenges faced on the Kokoda track sculpted my perception of the word health.

Without the motivation to recover, the mind will never fully return to how it was before. Society and culture has influenced us to feel sorry for and look down upon people who have previously suffered or are currently suffering a mental illness. In reality, we should look up to their determination to overcome their illness. Motivation is not only needed in medical situations, it is part of our everyday wellbeing. We all need motivation and passion to follow our dreams and do what we love. It is often too easy to listen to others opinions and do what is expected of us. Each and every person who is attending university has motivation and passion to be there. Having the motivation to follow your dreams and feeling fulfilment at the small milestones along this journey is what health is to

In 2011 The Department of Health published the report No Health Without Mental Health: A Cross-Governmental Mental Health Outcome Strategy For People Of All Ages (HM Government 2011) supporting the Government’s aim of achieving a balance between mental and physical health, with the view that an individual’s mental health is central to their quality of life (HM Government 2011). This strategy is relevant in Mental Health nursing today as The Office for National Statistics (2009) discovered that one in four people will experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem at some point in their life and one in six adults experience a mental health problem at any one time. From these statistics it is evident to see that mental health has a significantly large impact on the population as a whole and subsequently influences the health and quality of lives of many individuals. One of the main objectives of this strategy is to is to improve both the physical and mental health of those suffering with a mental illness, promoting recovering and providing support to not only themselves but also to their family and friends (Department of Health 2011).…

“Imagine someone who suffers from lapses of memory, hallucinations, sudden depressions and nameless fears. These are all mental symptoms, in the straightforward sense of involving states of mind” (Scruton, 1981, p. 37). Imagine living with these “lapses of memory, hallucinations, and sudden depressions and nameless fears” every day. Now imagine being unemployed and trying to learn to cope with all these symptoms on top of trying to succeed and find a job. There are many people who have a mental illness that have the desire to obtain community employment. Many people want to work so they can have the money to fulfill their needs and their wants, to be independent and to socialize with their coworkers and/or customers. It motivates people, creates…

The mind is one of the most fascinating and intricate parts of the individual, which may also be the essence that makes us human. It not only has a major influence on the brain, nervous system, all organs, and glands but is also tied to our spiritual side, our souls and differentiates us from every other person on the planet. Its power is limitless and can withstand many oddities, but in the same moment can end us entirely. Mental illness is one of those oddities, it is manageable and a person can live a full life with it but if they go undiagnosed and without proper treatment, they continue through life as half their potential.…

Negativity towards mental health is largely part of a lack of understanding and education towards the condition. It is believed that this may be due to the fact that mental illness is not a condition that an individual can see with the naked eye. It is a hidden condition and for some people, is hard to comprehend. Unfortunately, in some cases, there is an unnecessary stigma attached to individuals with mental health issues. However, these negative views do not help the suffering individual to deal with, recover, or grasp their own issues. Pessimistic views towards mental health can in some ways be perceived as discrimination. This in turn can have a negative effect on their recovery or management of their condition making the usual hurdles of life difficult to overcome. For example; difficulty with finding work, relationship issues, managing day to day life and social inclusion is only naming a few. Offering help and support to sufferers of mental health issues can be the key to their recovery and/or management. Negativity towards the condition can more often than not cause an individual to succumb to the illness. On the flip side, the majority of individuals approach mental health positively and it is perceived by most with understanding and comprehension. Undertaking positive mental health strategies by the suffering individual can have a huge effect on the management of their illness. But also having positive individuals surrounding them and understanding their issues can produce an even bigger response in their recovery. Offering that support no matter how little can assist an individual in their own positive thinking and their journey to mange any hurdles…

What I learned from this project is very helpful to me as to how I will interpret people having any psychological disorders. I became aware of the social stigmas, the lies and truths behind it, and the facts that support each topic of illnesses. Each time I came around to watch my classmates’ presentation boards, I learn something new about mental illness. I know now that one in four people will be affected by mental illness, whether it’s their own personal struggle or that of a family member. I know now that there are many treatment options. For example, I learned that schizophrenia affects more than 2.2 million people in the United States and 28% of those people live independently. Finally, we have learned that persons with serious mental illness, like all other people, find themselves affected by a number of influences when trying to find and keep meaningful employment. Some of these influences are in their control, but many are not.…

Mental health care is important in transitioning patients from one level to another. The care should be of very high quality to ensure that there is no breakdown during the transfer. This is so because the next level might be unfamiliar and the patient will find difficulties in adjusting to the new conditions. Breakdown is a major setback to the recovery process. This specifically affects adult patients who have other health complications apart from mental conditions.…

In 1948 the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as “state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease, but moves beyond this definition to encompass spiritual, developmental, and environmental aspects over time”. (Edelman, C. & Mandle, C. 2010, p. 7). The increase in health care cost made people to think about prevention of disease and now a day’s industry is more and more advocating people for health promotion and wellness. Health promotion is the science and art of helping people change, their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health (Potter, P., & Perry, A. 2005). Health promotion not only focuses on individual but on community itself like eliminating or containing contagious diseases. It educates and provides guidance to individuals to choose healthy living standards, nutritional foods, social and spiritual developments etc. thereby reducing the chance of getting disease. It also focuses on individuals to take measures from worsening an existing disease and rehabilitation thereafter. Health promotion has two strategies involving individual – passive and active. Passive strategies are like recent United Nations resolution advocating less use of mercury which is harmful to human beings. Here an individual participation is less wherein active strategies require individual commitment and involvement. An example is daily exercise to…
