As a Respiratory Therapist, my rehabilitation practice is not as traditional as other Allied Health rehabilitation experience. Many of my respiratory clients are individuals requiring some sort of respiratory support; either with invasive mechanical ventilation, inhaler treatments or non- invasive support such as BIPAP/CPAP therapy. Rehabilitation of a ventilated patient often begins while they are still being mechanically ventilated. At times it takes many weeks, for them to build up enough respiratory strength, so that they can have complete independence from the ventilation support. Often, because of shift changes and staff changes, patients end up not having a consistent ICU rehabilitation program, sometimes prolonging their ventilation support. I have worked with many patients in this circumstance. My experience in the Asthma Clinic involved working with adult and pediatric pulmonary clients. My tasks included creating and following up with individual Asthma Action Plans, teaching proper medication use and delivery and encouraging individuals to take control of their illness.
