Estee Lauder: The Woman Behind The Company
It all began with a woman, a dream, and four skin care products. Mrs. Estee Lauder and her husband launched the Estee Lauder Company in 1946. (Heritage, n.d.) The flagship brand, Estee Lauder, was launched with only four products. Today, Estee Lauder products are sold in more than 140 countries and territories, with annual revenues of more than $5 billion. (King, n.d.) Mrs. Lauder was an effective leader and visionary businesswoman, who changed the face of the cosmetic industry. (Heritage, n.d.) She founded the Company with “a culture of quality, style, and unsurpassed customer service” which has made The Estee Lauder Companies Inc. a global cosmetics leader. (About Estee Lauder, n.d.)
Estee Lauder was born and raised in Corona, Queens, New York, by her Hungarian mother and Czech father. From an early age Estee was interested in beauty, and mentored by her chemist uncle, John Schotz. She began the business by selling her uncle’s skin care products to beauty salons and hotels, because she sold them better than he could. After their marriage in 1930, Joseph Lauder became Estee’s business partner. Several years later, Joseph and Estee managed to accumulate $50,000, which they had planned to use for an ad campaign. The ad agency declined the business, because the money would hardly pay for one full-page ad in a prominent magazine. Instead, Estee had to find other ways to spread the word about her products. Against all odds, she managed to build her business with only $50,000, and her own interpersonal, conceptual, and technical skills. (Alef, 2010)
Throughout her life, Mrs. Lauder demonstrated strong interpersonal skills. Her most important legacy was her belief that in order to make a sale, she must touch the customer. Mrs. Lauder spent a great deal of time behind the sales counter, sampling
