The earliest references to animal testing are found in the writings of Greeks in the 2nd and 4th centuries BCE. Aristotle and Erasistratus were among the first people to perform experiments on animals. In the 12th- century Moorish Spain introduced animal testing as an experiment method for testing surgical procedures before introducing them to human patients. Animals have been used repeatedly throughout history. In the 1880s, Louis Pasteur introduced his germ theory by inducing anthrax in sheep. In 1937, a pharmaceutical company created a drug used to treat streptococcal infections by using DEG as a solvent. DEG was deadly to the human body which caused the deaths of hundreds of people. The damage caused by this incident and similar disasters led to the passing of the 1938 Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act requiring for all safe testing to be tested on animals before they could be marketed. Innocent animals have been suffering for centuries. Animal life …show more content…
“Almost every major medical achievement has relied on animal testing at some stage in the process” (O’Neill 1). Scientist conclude that animal testing allows the creation of new drugs. Animal testing is cheap for them. And there is a large supply of animals for medical research. Animals are easily bred, and can easily be maintained stable in controlled laboratories. Some diseases and health problems can only be studied in living organisms. People believe that if animal testing was not conducted most of our products would not be around. People rely so much on animal testing. They believe that animal testing can save their lives, and that without it we do not know if a product is safe or not. Scientist have come down to the conclusion that animals and human body structure are very similar. Animals are biologically similar to humans in many ways. Animals are easy for scientist to study due to the fact that they have short life-cycles. Their whole life-span can be studied very easily in a controlled environment. Scientists need to follow the three Rs before practicing any kind of experimentation in an animal. The tree Rs
