Ethics in the Workplace
The North-Chevy Chase Elementary School’s mission statement says that, “The North Chevy Chase family (students, staff, and parents), is committed to building success in our children, both academically and as future citizens. The encouragement to achieve and the expectation of success are underpinned by a supportive environment, which offers every student the opportunity to flourish as an individual. Our commitment to address the needs of different learning styles includes an adaptive curriculum where teachers, with the support of the administration, encourage success by using their creativity and continuously acquired learning to maximize each child’s potential.”
Today Izzy and I interviewed Vicki Leahy-Jones, the counselor at N-CC, to discuss the code of ethics and the code of conduct that N-CC has for its staff. Mrs. Leahy-Jones said that N-CC really didn’t have a written code of ethics, and that it was an unwritten list of rules to follow. Two of the things she mentioned were student/counselor and student/teacher confidentiality. I asked her to explain the difference between student/ teacher and student/ counselor. The biggest difference was that the teacher, Ms. Uzupis, could tell a parent anything that she asks of their child, while on the other hand the counselor, Mrs. Leahy-Jones, can only say something to the parent if the student is a danger to themselves or others, or is trying to hurt themselves. Another example was the right to student learning. Ms. Uzupis mentioned one example of an intern who would constantly text on her cell phone during classroom instruction. She also talked about general things like dressing appropriately, no cursing, being on time. N-CC provides a nurturing, positive, and safe school community where the staff all takes ownership of their roles and responsibilities to achieve academic and personal excellence for all their students.
