In 1993 the World Wide Web source code was released to the world and three years later it started to be commercialized. In 2002 the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) was developed and people started using their mobile phones to access the internet. (CERN) In these days a big part of the population has a smartphone in the pockets. The information technology is one of the fastest growing markets in the world and brings along a lot of opportunities for companies these days. This evolution although, faces the company’s CIOs with big problems from day to day. In order to be competitive in the global workspace, they have to make a wide range of decisions on how to use the different types of technology in the work environment. The CIO has to evaluate the benefit for new information technologies and make decisions on how to implement these systems in the company’s workplace.
As part of the globalization, people are working together all over the world and with the development of the internet they can get connected easily wherever the employments have the ability to access to the internet. The workplace is no longer stationary and with the use of laptops, tablets or smartphones employees can work in every environment they choose as long as internet connection is available.
In order to give employees the possibility to access the company’s network and provide them with all the necessary information from all over the world, they need a solution which fits the needs of everybody. This solution was found in cloud computing. This paper explains what cloud computing is and what the pros and cons are, especially in relation to a flexible workplace.
