Evelina turned from the scene. A noise caught her attention. It came from down the hall. She approached the door with all the caution she had and looked inside. On the floor there was a woman eating from a tray of food. Evelina recognized her as the woman who was turned before her. She pondered if she should let her out or not. In the end she decided against it. She retreated from the window and tiptoed down the hall. During her exploration of the various corridors she found many bodies. All of them on the ground with similar wounds. After some time, she stopped trying to be stealthy. It was as quiet as the grave and she needed to get back to Oliver. The only problem was she was in a vast, complex tunnel system and she had no map. Fear seized her. Evelina needed to find a way to Oliver and then an exit. She ran through the halls, searching every opening she could find for her cell. Somehow she stumbled upon the open room from when they first arrived. Hugo was sitting on his chair, slumped over with crimson staining his white shirt. Evelina looked around and cried out in frustration. She didn’t pay close enough attention when they escorted her to her cell the first time. She approached the side door she was led to. When she was on the other side of it, Evelina looked at all the passageways. Her knees buckled and she dropped to the floor. She waited until the voice called out again followed by a groan.
“Oliver?” He came turning around a corner, putting pressure against his torso. Relief and concern replaced the fear and confusion. Evelina hurried to him, stumbling along the way. Her arms wrapped around him, trying to support him as best she could in her weakened state. She helped him sit down.
“You were gone too long so I came looking for you,” he wheezed. Evelina shrugged and looked away, embarrassed about why she didn’t return.
“I got lost.” His mouth twitched into a half smile. She tried to smile back, but couldn’t.
“Oliver, everyone I came across was dead except for another prisoner.” She waited for him to respond, but all she got was a sigh and a nod.
“I don’t know what happened, but you did something right. We need to find that ritual book so no one else can use it, set the prisoners free and leave. Soon.” Evelina nodded in agreement. It was silent between them for a while before she broke it.
