One example of disruption of biological rhythms is due to shift work and shift lag. This disrupts your sleeping pattern because it means you are required to be alert at night, so need to sleep during the day. This reverses and disrupts your circadian rhythm, becoming desynchronised where it is no longer entrained by EZ’s. There are many consequences of desynchronisation such as sleep deprivation. Shift workers find it hard to sleep during the day because of the EZ’s such as light and sound disturbances that keep you awake. This means shift workers find it even more difficult to stay awake at night time because they have had a poor quality daytime sleep. This then affects their alertness. Night workers often experience a circadian ‘trough’ of decreased alertness during their shifts. For example Boivin found that cortisol levels are at their lowest between 12 and 4am, which is the primetime a night worker, would be working. This means they have low alertness and decreases the efficiency of their job. There are also many effects on health due to shift work. A significant relationship has been found between shift work and organ disease. For example, Knutsson found that people who worked shift work for more than 15 years were likely to develop heart disease than a non-shift worker. This may be due to the direct effect of desynchronisation in the circadian rhythm.…
A third and final effect of shift work is sleep deprivation. It has been suggested that sleeping during the day is less effective than at night due to more…

Many jobs today work around the conventional time schedule, such as working 8am to 4pm. The human body comes built with a biological clock that keeps everything in sync. One may ask what a biological clock is. This paper will explore the effects that are caused by working shift work. Shift work can be defined as “a system of employment where an individual’s normal hours of work are, in part, outside the period of normal day working and may follow a different pattern in consecutive periods of weeks” (Dictionary,2009) . Working shift work may cause many negative effects in many aspects such as sleep, family and health. Studies by researchers from ‘The NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL of MEDICINE’ show that people who worked shift work had a higher amount of reported vehicle collisions. (Barger, Cade, Ayas, Cronin, Rosner, Speizer & Czeisler, 2005). With shift working having many issues it may make one re-think whether it is worth the toll it takes on the body. This paper explores all of the major issues that arise from working shift work.…

The first step of the solution can be achieved if school starts later. Students would also have a better start in the morning. Students can study for their tests, have a balanced meal, and most importantly, they will have a good sleep. Many experiments were held about how sleeping can affect students’ daily lives in school. In one of the experiments, it concluded with students who slept more had better academic scores. Furthermore, in personal experiences, students would have better sleeping schedules, if school starts later. Those students would have positive outcomes, such as having better concentration and reduce being fatigue. Additionally, in the opposite situation, if students had a bad sleeping schedules, it can affect their mark. In one of students’ lives, there would be a chance that students can forget to do their homework in the morning. If students have a better sleeping schedule yesterday, this can be prevented since their memory would be improved. If school starts later students can improve their…
At the beginning of this century medical scientists made a surprising discovery: that we are built not just of flesh and blood but also of time. They were able to demonstrate that we all have an internal "body clock" which regulates the rise and fall of our body energies, making us different from one day to the next. The idea of an internal "body clock" should not be surprising, since the lives of most living things are dominated by the 24-hour night-and-day cycle. The most obvious feature of this cycle is the way we feel tired and fall asleep at night and become awake during the day. If the 24-hour rhythm is interrupted, most people experience unpleasant side effects. As well as the daily rhythm of sleeping and waking we also have other rhythms which last longer that one day and which influence wide areas of our lives.…
