Examples Of Aristotle's Utility Friendships
Aristotle states that utility friendships are the ones with the most complaints (1162b5). To me, this is one of the most important topics Aristotle has stated so far. I had a friendship in high school which I can now define as a utility friendship. We both used each other just for the fact that we could benefit off of one another. She gave me rides places and I gave her someone who she could vent to about all of her problems in life. When one of us could not help the other, one would complain because we did not get what we wanted. We were only friends because of what one offered the other. When we would try and have a pleasure friendship, it would never work. I always felt bad that I was only friends with her because she would give me rides and she was only friends with me so she …show more content…
When we would try and be better friends, it would always end up in arguments and complaints about one another. When I learned what Aristotle said about utility friendships being the ones with the most complaints, I did not feel bad that we could not become better friends. When I stopped needing rides and when her life got better, our friendship ended because we no longer found each other useful. Aristotle made it known that these type of friendships were common and it made me feel less guilty about the utility friendship that I used to have because I knew other people had this as well. Aristotle describes a virtue friendship as one that will be permeant as long as the people in the relationship are both moral (1157a18-20). He says that the only people that can experience the virtue friendship are people who are morally good (1157a18-20). I can

When friendships are dissolved, the consequences can be devastating. In Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics - VIII – IX he explains how humans learn from one another, and that humans are innately social animals (Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics - VIII – IX, 148-149). Friendships are required in life learn about values. Without friends, humans would not be able to learn such values from each other, nor will they be able to confide in each other. Having friends in life allow for the mutual growth of both parties. Rebecca Traister writes in her article “What Women Find in Friends That They May Not Get from Love” her experiences with her friend Sara. Traister says, “In each other, we found respite, recognition, a shared eagerness to relax, take stock and talk about it all.” (Sara Traister, “What Women Find in Friends That They May Not Get from Love, 1), going on to say this relationship was mutual where they benefited from each other’s company. As they both grew together over time, much like Aristotle suggests is the value of friendship. Humans life are not fulfilled unless friends are there to support each other. As Traister says, “For many women, friends are our primary partner through life” (Sara Traister, “What Women Find in Friends That They May Not Get from Love, 5). In Traister’s case, the friendship she shares with Sara is a friendship of virtue.…

In Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, he states that there are three types of friendships that can be obtained- the friendship of pleasure, the friendship of utility and the friendship of good. The friendship of pleasure is a relationship based on the simple enjoyment of being around a particular person; the friendship of utility is a relationship based on convenience. In other words, this friendship has no real meaning behind it, other than this person is around this person frequently, so they might as well be friends. Lastly, the third category of friendship is that based on good. Friendship of good is the pure delight of one person and everything about that person. Good is the best form of friendship because it is the most virtuous. This…

Within book 8 and 9 of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, he proposes friendship is one of the most choice-worthy goods an individual can have (Aristotle 149, 1170a, section 7). However, in chapter 3 of book 8, Aristotle asserts the finest friendships are enduring insofar it is good, and the virtues remain the same. However, his proposal about the similarities of virtues doesn't seem entirely correct since people gradually change over time, but the relationship can continue to be good and individuals remain close friends. Problematically, Aristotle asserts if the characteristics of the friend were to change, the friendship ought to be dissolved since the peer can potentially become bad; unless the agent can return their friend to their original…

Aristotle once said, “Friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies.” There are many things that go into the process of friendship. Some people deal with friendship one way while others deal with it in another way. Cicero had a lot to say about the different aspects of friendship in his time, but how would he view modern friendship? Some friendships Cicero may not be proud of; like the common relationships that are forced on in a classroom or work place and the lack of allowing nature to take control and make the friendships that are meant to happen. However, Cicero would be happy with the way the higher level friendships have developed in virtue and value.…

Friendship is first and foremost an ideal, something to aspire to, much like wisdom. It is never fully attainable, at most we are offered brief moments to its truth and we should revel in it when it shows itself. Much like wisdom, the pursuit of it is noble, for instance you don’t break off everything because of one small fight. If that is the case then it would not be a strong relationship. One does not give up when things start to get rough, so the pursuit of an impossible goal, actualizing an ideal, is futile, but we become better people through the chase and that is what…

    Cicero On Friendship

Cicero had multiple characteristics on friendship; however in this paper only three of his characteristics of friendship will be discussed. According to Cicero, friendship is founded on a moral and ethical base, and there is a relationship between virtue and friendship. Virtue is essential for friendship and friendship helps in maintaining virtue. Virtue is behavior showing high moral standards. Therefore friendship is based on virtue, and friendship helps achieve greater virtue. Cicero supports this in his text by saying “Those who place the ultimate good in virtue act the most splendidly, and virtue produces and contains friendship within itself, nor can friendship exist in any way without virtue.” (Cicero 8). When choosing friends, it would be best to pick ones with the same morals. However regardless of different cultures and lifestyles almost everyone has similar morals. We should all aim to get the most out of a healthy relationship that includes learning good morals and virtues.…

Friendship is a virtue or at least involves virtue. Friendship is always a special thing but people tend to forget about how much its value is. Friendship is not just necessary, but also noble.Friendship consists of goodwill between two people. You can only have a few friends being that its take some precious time to build a real friendship. Aristotle’s speaks about how there are three kinds of friendship. The first is friends of utility, where both people receive some benefit from each other. Aristotle believed that this is the type of friendship that is for the old. Aristotle argued that they “are at such a time of life pursue not what is pleasant but what is beneficial.” The second is friends of pleasure, where both people are attracted to each other, good looks, or other their pleasant qualities all together . aristotles says this friendship is for the young. Aristotle argues that the young because “...quickly become friends and quickly stop...” and “...love and stop loving quickly...” The third is friends of excellence, where both people admire the other’s excellence and help one another strive for excellence. Aristotle says this about friends of excellence “...complete sort of friendship between people who are good and alike in virtue...”friends of virtue or excellence is hard to come by especially in the world we live in today because it is so much individualism. According to Aristotle the first two friendships are accidental, because in these case friends are only thinking about their own utility and pleasure, not are going to change over a period of time. If a friendship is based on excellence it will be a long lasting relationship, because excellence is a quality. This kind of friendship is the one everyone wants to have and it overlooks the other two friendships. This kind of friendship though is hard to find and takes a lot of time to progress but it is worth it. It is nothing like having a real and true friend. Friends who want the same thing will…

Brief summary The Vietnam War commonly known as the Second Indochina War began as a conflict in 1959, after five years of the division of the country by the Geneva Accords. The United States and other members of the SEATO (Southeast Asia Treaty Organization) joined forces with South Vietnam in contesting communist forces comprised of South Vietnamese supporters of the communist National Liberation Front known as Viet Cong (VC), and the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). In addition, the North had benefited from military and financial support from China and the Soviet Union who were members of the Communist block.
