Friendship is a universal desire that most humans share. In nature, it is a trust, a bond that’s helpful to have at certain times in life. There are many examples of friendships in the world today, such as Forrest Gump and Bubba. However, in Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie’s friendship show that friendship can hurt. “They render us vulnerable, in doing so, they add dimensions of significance to our lives that can arise only from being, in each case, friends with this or that particular individual, a party to this or that particular life.” Friendships should be chosen carefully or it can cause more pain than anything else. The “Friendship in an Age of Economics” speaks of how we value friendship. It says, “We benefit from our close friendships, but they are not a matter of calculable gain and loss. While we draw pleasure from them, they are not a matter solely of consuming pleasure.” However, in the age of economics, there are two types of friendships that can reflect the lives we are encouraged to live. As described above, it is a relationship where we hope for something in return. At first glance, it seems like a terrible type of relationship to have, but is it?
