Romeo and Juliet is a love story of two teenagers that love each other unconditionally, until the feud of their families took a tragic turn of the end of their lives. The two teenagers loved each other so much that they took their own lives to try and end the family feud. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has a theme of family feuds hurt society is proven by the literary elements characterizations, imagery, and setting. In the story, Shakespeare uses the literary element characterization to help the theme to be better understood by the readers. He uses the quote, “But come, young waverer, come go with me, in one respect I’ll thy assistant be; for this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households’ rancour to pure haste (Shakespeare …show more content…
In the story, he uses the quote “Three civil brawls bred of an airy word, by three old Capulet and Montague, have three disturbed the quiet of our streets, and made Verona’s ancient citizens cast by their peace, to part your cankered hate (Shakespeare 31).” Sampson and Gregory are hanging out on the streets of Verona when some montague servants show up. They start fighting and Tybalt and Benvolio show up. Tybalt urges the fighting, and then the Prince of Verona shows up (Shmoop). The prince is saying that if the families proceed to fight in the streets of Verona, they will all be sentenced to death. Although much of the bloodshed came from family members that had died in the streets of Verona, they were not the only ones to lose their lives to this constant fighting. Shakespeare uses the setting to get society involved, so people of the society died too. The story, Romeo and Juliet, is used to send the message to his audience that family feuds hurt society. Some people believe that this story was used to help end a family feud that happened in this time.
