The student is five years old. The student is in kindergarten. The kindergarten class has fourteen children. The classroom is a mainstreamed and both teachers have special education experience. The student has strengths in reading comprehension, phonics, and spelling. He enjoys puzzles and can complete a fifty piece puzzle on his own. The student focuses on the end pieces of the puzzle first. The puzzle is a picture of the United States and the students reads all the states and their capitals. When the student completes the puzzles he recites the cities that are listed. His weaknesses are in physical activities that involve group participation. The student does not show interest in teacher directed games such as leap frog. The student has trouble making eye contact and engaging in conversations. The student repeats questions when he is asked. The student repeats what he hears throughout the day so he will often say hello, how are you? When the student repeats the phrase he does not make eye contact or pause for a response. The student has an IEP and a goal for the student is to promote conversations with peers, family members, and teachers. The IEP states that the student works with a therapist for speech. The speech therapist states that the student uses echolalia which is repetitive use of language. The student can read age appropriate books for eight year olds. For the past four years, I have worked as a teaching assistant at the Child Development Center, a preschool on Berry College’s campus. This work experience has helped me become more competent working with people through my interactions with parents and teachers as well as through interactions with the preschoolers in my class. Working with very young children enhanced my ability to communicate because I have to find different ways to explain tasks in order to reach children at various levels of comprehension and ability. There were also some English language learning students from Asian and Eastern European backgrounds, and I had to learn quickly how to communicate with them in a way that would not make them feel isolated from the rest of the class. This struggle to communicate was highlighted just a few weeks ago when a new student from Russia joined our class. On his first day with us, I could not get him to move from his spot on the floor after naptime. I kept attempting to talk to him and to help the student roll up his cot, only to have him turn away every time I tried to speak with him. Needless to say, this was an extreme case of a child who spoke almost no English and who I later found common ground with after many failed attempts on my part to communicate. I set up an appointment with the Kids Club daycare at 9:45 am on November 4th to observe for an hour of toddler classroom who were between three and four years old. The principle gave me a warm greeting and took me to the class and introduced me to the teachers and the children. Everyone there made me feel welcomed. I chose a place where I can sit, observe and write my note as well as to be away from children's sight. In the classroom there were five boys, two girls, and two teachers Ms. Nadia and Ms. Emma. The classroom itself was large and spacious. The classroom is very appropriate for children this age and it has many interesting areas such as a blocks and art area, and children taped some of their previous work in the art area. One strategy employed to manage behaviour within my nursery is distraction. Distraction is used for example if a child is clinging to their parent and does not want them to leave. The mother and child both come into the nursery room and a key worker will get a child involved with an activity for example a puzzle and once the child is focused the mother will be able to leave without the child noticing and having a tantrum or being distressed. My first method in correcting these low level behavior issues is to remind students of the classroom rules. I will then give examples of behaviors that are not tolerated in the classroom setting. The most effective method to handle these situations is to quickly redirect the student. If a teacher knows there is one student that always blurts out, the teacher should address the issue before asking the question. The teacher for instance could say James, I know you always know the answer first but, today we are going to give other students a try. There is question and concern that behavior problems that affect preschoolers may continue to affect them later in life. These behavior problems may compromise their later chances in school. Young children who are emotionally unstable and attend school while persistently sad, withdrawn, or that have disruptive behaviors may receive less instruction. These children will also have fewer chances to interact with their peer group and not be receptive to peer-based learning. Children who are disruptive and sad also risk loosing out on being an active learner. Children who come from a lower economic background have a much greater disadvantage than other children.
