Each teacher will collect data in a different way; it depends on the complexity of the situation. Some teachers may use an assessment tool called ABC. ABC stand for Antecedent Behavior Consequence “Chart offers opportunities to note the setting, time and frequency behaviors occur, what happened just before the behavior, a description of the behavior itself, and the consequence of the behavior”(NCLD, 2013). Lots of teachers hit the obstacle of time, because observing a students behavior and documenting every aspect of it is very time consuming. Time is …show more content…
You want the decision to be based on fact, not personal opinion. You want to actual help the child. Once the data is colleted it is important to bring in other professional, and any one that has contact with the child, like school counselor, principal, family, teachers, teachers aide or special education teacher “to pinpoint what triggers the behavior, what consequences are maintaining it, and what the child is getting or avoiding as a result”( Kaiser, B. Sklar Rasminsky, J. (2012). This will help to keep the action plan forming being personal opinion and to analyze the behavior. Then you will come up with a hypothesis. Attention from someone whether it be a peer or adult. An object toy or activity. For example; Jack hits another student in line each day and the other student yells. This is giving Jack the attentions he wants, because the teacher will pull him off to the side and talk with him, plus the other child yelps in pain. The teacher decides to try having Jack walk around the room to each desk dismissing the students to get into line. Then Jack will lead the other students down the hall. The teacher think this will give Jack the attention he needs and help him learn to be a positive role model. Another is when a child does not know how to do something or they are not advanced as the others. They want to escape or avoid the activity. For example; when sitting down as a class in a circle to color a picture, work with beads, and put puzzles together Timmy throws his class materials and becomes noncompliant. Ms. Crystal has been removing him from the class activity. This has been going on for a week. Timmy knows if he throws the crayons he will be removed. Ms. Crystal notices that his fine motor skills are not that high and he has difficulty. She decides to put the class into smaller groups. She puts Timmy in a group that knows how to ask for assistance. To see if this will encourage Timmy to ask for help, instead of becoming non compliant. The last being self-stimulation. Helen becomes upset and starts to
