For example, there are times when I feel I can’t speak to a person of a different color. At such times, when I am put in a group discussion with a colored student I feel uncomfortable. I look for an alternate way to excuse myself and join another group without people of color. However, if it's obligatory that I must stay in that group, I sit quietly and don’t contribute to the discussion. Suspending my feelings and moods, I don’t think racism is a good practice. I believe that many society problems are rooted in racism. Some examples of historical events rooted by racism were the American slavery era and the holocaust (A Question of Color, 1993). These two tragic events should be mandatory and taught in American classrooms. When discussing slavery and the civil rights movement, these two historic events made me appreciate how much tolerance our country grew throughout the years. Forty years after the Civil Rights movement, the country grew together and made progress by electing our first black President. It is also important to teach the youth that judging others should be based on the person’s role in society, rather than skin color. As mentioned before, information is power.
