Threat deterrence is an important factor in keeping an area safe. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) defines threat deterrence as “The threat of force in order to discourage an opponent from taking an unwelcome action.” The pure deterrence of an armed staff is enough to spark the purest of human instinct, survive. Our military is a perfect example of a proper deterrence of threat. Fear of retaliation is why people don't commit homicides and mass shootings inside of police stations and military bases and instead, they choose movie theaters and schools because there is no fear of immediate retaliation, and without fear of immediate retaliation they are more likely to commit these horrendous crimes.
