What does it mean to be an American?

There are many meanings on what it means to truly be an American. Including, how this identity as an American has changed overtime from the past to present day. A specific value that I strongly agree with is “Opportunity” and that every single person on this earth deserves a chance. To begin with, an example of what it truly means to be an American from the past, the article “Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address” and how Lincoln wrote a speech proclaiming his respect and honor for the soldiers who fought during the war. In addition, an example of this is how Lincoln gave them the opportunity to rest in peace on this great battle field. While, speaking for the Soldiers who fought for our liberty and so that all

Also, the reality of what it means to be an American is completely different and is unfair such as, the poor is referred as weak and useless while the educated is referred as rich and wealthy. For instance, in the article “Let America Be America Again” it says “America should go back to being the dream that the dreamers had, and be a "great strong land of love." There should not be kings or tyrants or people being crushed by someone above them.” Including, Langston Hughes believes that being an American means to be free and to not be controlled upon and that equality is a priority whether a person is rich or poor and that it is just a title at the end of the day and to dream bigger and endure more opportunities. Therefore, this is what it truly means to be an American and how it has changed significantly from the past and present. In addition, how opportunity is a amazing value that adds on to being an American and how you choose your

America has always been regarded as the land of the free and the place where if you work hard, you will reach success. However, Langston Hughes disagrees with this idea in his passage, “Let America be America Again”. Hughes suggests that America was never “America” in the first place, and without unity, America will not be the place everyone has worked so hard to build to be what it is today. In “Let America be America Again”, Hughes develops a theme of commonality and unity being the factors that affects the objective of America being the land of the free.…

To be an American, means to have freedom over one’s own life. In this country of ours we are blessed to be able to express ourselves through freedom of speech without punishment. Because of our constitution, not only do we have the right to express our own individual beliefs with freedom of speech, but we are also able to practice our own religions, bear arms, and enforce the press, letting us receive news about the government itself. This is truly what it means to be an American. To be individual, and live your own life the way you choose…

For instance, President Obama spoke once about the American dream. He said without the persistence that his grandparents, father in law and mother had he would not be where he is today. The relentlessness that pushed his family was passed on to him and has proven itself to be the only way to accomplish your American dream. And as Langston Hughes points out in his poem “Let America be America Again”, this same determination has been seen in America for centuries. He writes about the evolution of America and her people.…

I also think being an American is a big responsibility.” This is the response of 10-year-old Neil from Wisconsin when asked the question, “What does it mean to be an American?” Neil is right; Americans have responsibilities that are imperative to living in America and helping the United States be prosperous and successful. If everyone were to learn and follow these obligations, America could be the utopia it was meant to be. These certain responsibilities are: teaching responsibility, participating in voting, and supporting and defending the Constitution.…

America became a country on July 4th, 1776; over 240 years ago. That’s greater than 240 years of generations of people trying to define what it means to be an American, but few still stand true today from that long ago. Being accepting of others, not only other ethnic groups but fellow Americans as well, is one way in which things have not changed from the first American generation to the latest. One of the longest standing traits of the “poster child” American is being courageous, whether it be to earn our freedom or to fight for our rights as a civilization. Taking pride in our country is one of the oldest, and strongest, qualities of an American that was so important in the forming of our country and of equal importance, if not more so, today. Our generation defines what it means to be an American with the simple, and somewhat original, manner of being accepting of others, being courageous, and taking pride in our country.…

What being an American means to me is that I have the rights to do anything. Even though we are able to have all of these rights doesn’t mean we are able to take advantage of them there are still consequences for our actions. All the people in the Navy, Army, Air-force etc have the job to protect us, not everyone who shoots people just because. Being an American to me means being respectful to everyone. Like what Harry S Truman said, “you know that being an American is more than a matter of where your parents came from. It is a belief that all men are created equally and that everyone deserves an even break.” Being an American means to be brave loyal and kind to everyone no matter what. We…
