This might sound like a dialogue from a movie, but it was actually spoken by a very brave man. He is none another than Anna Hazare. Most of us did not even know who Anna Hazare was, before he went on a hunger strike against corruption in India on April 5, 2011. This great effort made him India’s favourite son and people from diverse fields flocked together at Jantar Mantar,Delhi and lighted candles to support him. Everybody know about Anna Hazare and his fight against corruption, but the fact that really disturbing was that more than half of the people did not know Anna’s real name. Where he is from? What was his background? Did he suddenly became an activist?
Now let us have a talk about Anna Hazare. Anna’s real name was Kisan Baburao Hazare. He was born on January 15, 1940 in Bhingar village of Ahmednagar district. Poverty and adverse conditions forced Anna Hazare to leave the 5 acres of cultivable land in Bhingar and shift to their ancestral home in Ralegan Siddhi. He was brought up by a childless aunt and she funded his education in Mumbai, but the shadow of poverty did not leave him. He had to give up his studies after class 7th. He started selling flowers for living. After few years he started his own shop along with his 2 brothers and he started making Rs.800/- per month which was not bad amount at that time. In 1963, Anna Hazare started his career as a driver in the Indian Army. In Indo-Pak conflict in 1965, Anna was the lone survivor after an exchange of fire in the border. Five years later he met with a major road accident.
