Experimental Analysis: The Lady Tasting Tea
The Lady Tasting Tea

It is interesting that statistics evolved from a simple experiment that involved tea, milk and tea cups. This particular experiment could not just be done one time because she would have a fifty percent chance of guessing correctly. The experiment needed to be planned precisely to find out whether the lady was truly able to distinguish the difference between the different pours. The scientist needed to come up with a formula that would accompany the experiment. The formula needed to include how many cups of tea were poured and what particular order they were done in. The scientist would then be able to work out the probability of the results depending whether or not the lady was correct or not.

Statistics is the second last strand of the Australian curriculum. It is paired with probability because of “the development that progressively links the two strands” (Australian Curriculum, 2016, para 5). In this area of mathematics I discovered the steps of statistical literacy skills (ABS, 2013, para 1). To confidently identify the statistical skills, I had to understand each step before moving onto the next. The steps were; ability to understand statistical concepts; ability to analyse, interpret and evaluate statistical information and finally, communicate statistical information and understandings. These new findings are explained in my WIKA (appendix k) for topic three. It explains how to correctly store the statistical data in the classroom such as using various graphs which relates to the situation.…

Statistical data dates back to as early as Ancient Greek time, where it was introduced by John Graunt, William Petty and Pascal in the 16th century. It was then re-introduced by Gottfriend Achenwall in the 17th century. This was a very exciting time for scientists, astronomers and physicists alike as it raised the confidence and knowing that the laws of nature were not of divine intervention. As the years went on, new mathematical discoveries were made such as census data, economy, mortality demographics, and the International Statistical Congresses, which all led to changing its name to “statistics”.…

Statistics is about more than calculations. It is about turning data into information and using this information to understand the population. A statistician will be asked to help solve real-world problems by designing a study, collecting data, analyzing the data, and writing up the results. As a final project, you will be asked to do something similar. Though the design and data collection will be done for you, you will be asked to analyze the data using the appropriate tests (ensuring the data are distributed normally) and write up the results, using statistical evidence to support your findings. Lastly, you will be asked to include recommendations, that is, apply the results to solve the real world problem.…
