Explain How Food Has Changed Over The Last 50 Years Ago
Over the past 50 years food has changed a lot. In this decade more and more foods are being genetically modified or soaked in chemicals than the last. Many people think food has changed for the better. I disagree with these people. I believe that food sources and diets are not as healthy today as they were 50 years ago. I conducted an interview with my 59 year old nana. I asked her things about the food she ate when she was younger. Most of the stuff she ate when she was younger came from the garden or straight from the butcher shop. The most common things she ate was pork straight from the butcher shop, fish, and greens from beets and dandelions. This made me think about the things we eat now. The most popular foods I eat now are things like canned vegetables or packaged meat from the grocery store. The …show more content…
She told me that she almost never went out to eat as a child. She told me that when a McDonald's was created it was a huge deal, but now new restaurants are being created every day. She gets fast food about 2 times a month. That's not too bad, but it still will have an affect on her body after a while. Nowadays everyone goes grocery shopping for their food or occasionally goes out to their garden to pick their food. Fifty years ago people would get their food primarily from their gardens and the butcher shop or farm. The grocery store was the last resort for them to obtain their food. This made them healthier than people now because they didn't have all those chemicals on their food because they weren't genetically modified. Finally, I asked her what her opinion on the way kids eat today was and she told me that she thinks they eat way to much junk food and not enough fresh fruits and vegetables. I fully agree with this because children's diets are based on junk food or genetically modified foods. They should be eating more organic foods and less of this junk

In the text, An Edible History of Humanity, Tom Standage provides his take on how the past was so deeply affected by food throughout the generations. The book approaches history in a different way altogether: as a sequence of changes caused, influenced or enabled by food. Standage explains that throughout history, food has not only provided sustenance but has also acted as the catalyst of societal organization, social change, economic expansion, military conflict, geopolitical competition and industrial development. As Tom Standage explains, since the time of prehistory to present, the facts surrounding these changes form a documentary that encompasses the entire human history.…

At my house there was always an emphasis on nutritional health. From an early age I had a vast amount of knowledge about which foods to eat and which to avoid. My dad is very particular about the food we eat. He puts a lot of emphasis on eating healthy and makes us eat lots of fruits and vegetables, even if we don’t like it. Often we would grow our own produce in our yard so my mom could use fresh vegetables and herbs in her cooking. Although…

I reexamined the foods i've been consuming and became astounded. Looking at something as classic as bread, a food that used to contain only a few ingredients, now contains dozens. The effects of the industrialization are all around us, especially in our food. I was unaware that products that make health claims aren't exactly healthy and was surprised to find all of the tricks and loopholes the FDA allows. The rules regarding wording are ambiguous, thus making the health claims on foods almost frivolous. This book examined the diet fads of the past in America such as when margarine was considered to be healthier than butter. I’ve learned that we come up with a new diet plan and find “stunning” data that will better our health all the time, but our health has yet to make a drastic improvement. While we continue to consume the Western Diet, we look for ways to outsmart it rather than do the obvious thing and move away from it. Ultimately, I came away from the book with far more knowledge then when I entered. The book offered great incite into the food industry and how it all works. I am glad I read this book and will definitely implement some lessons into my life.…

To begin, Pollan believes that people should have knowledge of foods from the ancient past. This valuable wisdom has been collected over thousands of years and can be used to improve present day diets. He states, “Modern Americans have lost the solution to the omnivore’s dilemma and today the problem is bigger than it has ever been. But it’s not an unsolvable problem. We need to recover the skills and knowledge people used to have” (104). Michael Pollan explains how learning about the history of food will result in food choices (such as eating locally-grown foods) which are safe and healthy.…

The book I read from the New Earth Archive was In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. The book analyzed the foods we eat and talks about the traditional American diet. It says that this western diet is more harmful than beneficial despite the breakthrough in nutirionism. The reader soon learns that this growing obsession with nutritionism is ironically hurting our diet more than it is helping it. This obsession has led us to scientifically alter food to boost the level of vitamins and nutrients in our food; to make it “healthier.”…

Science leads to medical, and technological advances, and even the modification of food humans eat, in Mary Shelley’s gothic novel, Frankenstein, she captures question of how scientists can do this. “The world to me was a secret, which I desired to discover: to her it was a vacancy, which she sought to people with imaginations of her own” (Shelly 21). How important is the food that the averages person puts into their bodies every day? Eating is a way of making peace, passing the time, sharing friendships, and having a communion. The narrator of Food Inc points out that, “The way we eat has changed more in the last 50 years than in the previous 10,000” (2008). How has it changed? Americans have gone from eating hunter-gatherer style organic greens and fruits, to severely processed sugars, carbohydrates, and high protein meats. Most Americans eat something similar to a “chicken and pasta” diet nowadays. This may not be bad, but is this “new” food really better for us than what people ate 50 and 100 years ago? Organic foods are substances that are produced using ways that do not involve modern unneeded synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Organic foods are also not processed using irradiation, industrial solvents, or chemical food additives (dictionary). Convenience food, or tertiary processed food, is commercially prepared food designed for ease of buying and consuming. Products designated as “convenience or processed foods” are often prepared so they can be sold as hot, ready-to-serve plates; as room-temperature, long lasting shelf life products; or as refrigerated or frozen products that require minimal preparation (usually just microwaving). There are studies that show that the food people consume on a daily basis…

Therefore, I believe nutrition should be more vital in the lives of today’s families. However, the way of life has caused many families to spend less time together at a dinner table. They are left to rely on fast food such as McDonalds and Wendy’s. This country places no importance on nutrition because we are now one of the most obese countries in the world. People don’t find it important until they go to the doctor and get bad news about their healthy. Let’s be realistic what taste good is what’s bad for you. Not many of us would make that change of eating healthy. Today’s family will be less likely to eat healthy because the cost of eating healthy cost more. Also depending on the area you live in. More urban areas will have more fresh food which will be easier to access them. Unlike in certain areas that have McDonalds on every block. Sometimes it’s the resource or helpful…

Over a hundred years ago the idea of farming and food consumption was very different then it is today. Regulation, education about health, research and technology, food processing, marketing, and wholesale has changed the food industry and the agriculture itself. Before going to the market or grocery store meant going to your back yard where you knew where everything was being grown and how it was being taken care of. Nowadays the majority of people do not raise their own animals or grow their own vegetables they go to a big chain or even a smaller local store to buy their food. When it comes to food safely and food production large farms and small farms are being negatively affected in many different areas. The current issues dealing with food safely and food production are, because there are a few big plants running are production of food its causing nation wide food poisoning and contamination, the public wants more regulation and centralized on farms which is then putting financial pressure on local farms, feedlots for animals, and our food is subject to terrorist attacks because only more then half our nations food is produced in the same place. I believe the way to fix our problem is to be informed and get involved.…

Thousands of companies everyday are finding ways to cut the cost of producing food. This includes changing the genetic makeup of food, adding preservatives and unhealthy chemicals, and feeding animals chemically engineered food to speed up their growth. All of these chemicals have a horrible affect on our bodies. Did you know our bodies take 5 extra years to decompose just because of all the preservative in our food? That amount of patients with cancer is increasing and many skeptics believe it to be linked to all the chemicals in our food.
