They all include tactics to keep the responding Officer’s safe. The Officer calling to the car will tell different occupants to exit the vehicle and to listen to his commands. The Officers will keep cover while the occupant exits the vehicle. The Cover Officer will get the violator into the prone position. The prone position has the violator on the ground belly down, arms out, palms up, ankles and feet crossed, with their head faced away from the arresting officer.
Clearing the vehicle is one of the most dangerous times due to the Officer not having full vision on the inside of the car. The Contact and Cover Officer will carry this out once all know suspects are in custody. If there is another passenger in the car the Officer must verbalize to the passenger that he/she can see them and they need to follow their commands. If the car is assumed to be clear the Contact and Cover Officer’s will have their side arms out and will search the car.
After all of the Six Steps are completed the High Risk stop in the field is not completed. There are many other things the Officer must do logistically to make sure that everything is done properly. Overall the Six Steps are designed to keep Officers safe and allow the stop to go precisely and
