In anatomy, the study of the human body, the body is divided into seven different approaches in order to view the body at a specific point. Those seven approaches are body plane and body direction, body cavities, quadrants and regions, anatomy and physiology, microscopic and macroscopic, body systems, and medical specialties. “Anatomic terms describe the directions within the body as well as the body’s reference planes, cavities and regions” (Anatomy Terms). The first of the seven approaches is body planes and direction. The body plane and direction help the doctor or medical staff identify what is wrong with a patient, and correctly document that information in charts and medical history. These are like the blue prints of how the human body works. The word cavity according to dictionary.com is “a hollow space within the body, an organ, a bone, etc.” . There are five body cavities within the human body. Those cavities are the cranial cavity, spinal cavity or canal, thoracic cavity, abdominal cavity, and the pelvic cavity. According to a PowerPoint presentation from Carlos J. Bidot (2007), the cavities are divided into two areas which are dorsal cavity which contains the cranial cavity, and the ventral cavity which contains the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic cavity. These cavities help identify the region of the body that the patient has an injury. The doctor would them label the direction or plane, and the position of the patient in order for the correct notes to be entered into the charts.
