I have found that a health service manager begins and ends with great pay and it is career that sets you up for success.
You are bound to find a position because of it job outlook for the next 10 years. Management positions are full time but they are flexible with great benefits. This role of being in management seems to give a feeling of purpose and achievement and that’s something I would like to pursue. health service management positions will always be needed so there is job security within the position taken which is something that is needed. Although most of the reasons are good there are cons to this position. It is a high-pressure job so it can lead to a lot of stress and the working condition are sometimes not ideal. There are also some extensive educational requirements for this position so it may not be attractive position to
some.
I interviewed a nurse/nurse manager that worked a Baptist east and Norton Audubon hospital for 33 years and she gave me a great idea of what a management position for health services may look like. As for typical day for management, seems to be an extensive yet organized day of on-site tasks. The nurse interviewed savored her position in the hospital being able to be the backbone for families with newborn baby's as she familiarized and mentored new nurses in the workforce. Although she had a great appreciation for her occupation she did not like what the current health care has done to nursing, as its starting to become more of a challenge to deliver the quality care she wants to provide. She was luckily able to obtain a position that she wanted in the nursing/management position, at the time there was an overabundance of nurses in the area. A recognized amount of intelligence and common sense is needed for this position. She acknowledged that I would need to retain information in school and to make sure the position pursued it something that I want. I learned that there will be a lot of pressure on me but as long as I know how to control my outcomes this can be a great position for me.
I learned that as a health service manager you must be a natural leader and be intelligent in many ways not only being book smart but also street smart. It’s a career that has a great outlook and will have many positions to obtain in the future. The pay is great even for people who are new to the position. There's a lot of education that goes into it. Stress is within the position but nothing I think I can't handle.
This is plan A and if this plan doesn’t not work out there is a plan B. If I only get an associate and never pursue a management position I will likely find an occupation as a medical secretary. It’s a good alternative because it doesn’t require a degree. It also receives a decent salary. It also has great benefits in the position.
