For many young adults, college is considered a major factor in the achievement of economic success. Thousands of students look forward to enrolling in college every year to prepare for successful careers in various majors. At least half of the students attending four year colleges complete a bachelor’s degree (Kuh,Cruce,Shoup,Kinzie,and Gonyea). After the completion of college enrollment processing a student barely has time to actually consider the possibility of being unsuccessful. Students enrolled in college will experience failure if they practice poor study habits, lack organizational skills and lack motivation.

Students may have gained experience with organizational skills in middle and high school by using a study chart or an agenda. The same process is necessary for the the college student. For the majority of college classes the student is given a syllabus outlining assignments and due dates within the first week of class. Failing grades are directly related to the students ability to master the lesson (King). College students who do not allow enough time to study will not be successful. The syllabus can be used as a tool in helping a student organize study skills. In high school, students are not likely to have strong organizational skills and may attend classes generally unprepared (Dixon and Rosenstengel). People who lack the good study habits and are not willing to ask for assistance increase their chances for failure. College students should take advantage of the college life and enjoy the experiences. However, students who have not developed good organizational skills will always struggle with failing grades and have no time at all to enjoy the experiences of college life. Student motivation is a key factor in to be successful in college. Students must remain goal motivated in order to remain focused. Good attendance promotes and increases in student learning and produces higher grades (Credè,Roch,and Kieszczynka,pg. 272). Students who lose focus and stop attending classes on a regular basis miss the necessary information needed to pass the test or the class.
