The most surprising fact for me and which made me really take notice was that in two years ” Facebook had reached a market audience of 50 million people”[1]. For me this represents what globalization and creativity is all about. Facebook is a social network website that allows people from all over the world to keep in contact with each other, you can chat, view pictures, leave comments and even play games. It doesn’t matter how old you are whether you’re male or female everyone is talking about Facebook and how many friends they have. When you think of it, it seems like such a simple idea that anyone could have come up with. Facebook was created in a college dorm by Mark Zukerberg and co-founders Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin in February 2004 by the end of that year “they had nearly reached 1 million users” [2], in July 2010 500 million people were using it. How do you become so creative? At the age of 12 Mark Zukerberg created a software program that would allow his father’s receptionist announce to him when a patient has arrived for dental surgery and called it ” Zucknet”[3] allowing the computers to send instant messaging, the following year AOL instant messenger was released.
Ask yourself why is Zukerberg so creative is it that he is naturally inventive, lucky or is it, he had a good education. I think it’s a combination of all three but especially a good education. During the present economic climate i believe that Ireland should be investing in the education system for the future generation. We certainly have the universities, ranked among the top 100 in the world are the “ University College Dublin (UCD) and Trinity College Dublin (TCD)”[4].
