“In other words, the secret to happiness through work is earned success” – Brooks adds further. (Brooks 2) Many people consider work as the source of happiness, but for some unclear reasons they fail to find happiness and wonder what they do wrong. Usually they think it is because they work and earn not really much. The truth is that they look for pleasure got from work not in the right way. The value of success is not in material result, it is in improving skills and mastering. Then, Brooks broadens this idea with the phrase: “You can measure your earned success in any currency you choose. You can count it in dollars, sure — or in kids taught to read, habitats protected or souls saved.” It is the great view of success; with such an approach, success will become happiness indeed. Richard Schoch, a cultural critic, in his essay “A Critique of Positive Psychology”, assumes work as the obvious source of happiness. He states that “Work itself—challenging, rewarding and secure employment—also contributes greatly to happiness” (Schoch 451). In fact, it would be strange if successful work could not lead to happiness. Work takes the large part of everyone’s life; being passionate about work, loving it, seeing use of work for society, getting positive results from work – all these are powerful sources of bright emotions and happiness. When a person puts all the efforts and then gets the benefits of it, he…

In the blurred definition of a successful life, happiness and pleasure are characteristics that have been lucid and parallel in the many contrasting ideas. Amongst successful icons in today’s society, Steve Jobs has been admired by many people as a role model and a representation of a successful journey. In Steve Jobs's commencement address to the Stanford University alumni, he elaborates on the idea that it is essential to follow one’s heart, in order to find what genuinely makes one happy. He also emphasizes the necessity to find a profession in which one is talented and willingly able to enjoy, in a way that portrays happiness in what one does as success. Although some may argue that his ideas are a bit superficial and naive,…

For instance, a person achieving genuine success in their life can be determined by if the person is finding joy and pleasure in their career and life experience. Individuals who have jobs that they find interesting and engaging are more likely to be satisfied with their work. In 2015, a study conducted by Jim Asplund and Gwen Elliot found that employees who use their strengths daily are eight-percent more productive and fifteen-percent less likely to quit their jobs than those working in a career field that does make use of their strengths and weaknesses.…

Having a career that makes the most money should not be a primary objective when searching for a job. Working joylessly with the intent to gain wealth cannot be viewed as the ultimate goal of life. Some who would argue that acquiring money is key to a fulfilling life in modern society. There is also the assumption that money allows a person to explore different opportunities and experiences, thus living life to the fullest. Is sacrificing one’s personal happiness and stunting passion within the workplace for the sake of gaining a substantial pay increase worth the price of such self-centered emotions? With this question in mind, a person can see the benefits of achieving wealth at the expense of personal contentment; however, merely engaging in different activities does not necessarily mean that a person has truly lived life to the best of their ability. Furthermore, the more a person centralizes salary, “ the less they will focus on satisfying their intellectual curiosity, learning new skills, or having fun, and those are the very things that make people perform best”(Chamorro-Premuzic). The blame on how a person views fulfillment in contemporary society should not shift to the individual, but to the influences of modern society. Thoreau urged people to choose careers that they are personally enthusiastic about because an individual's values and emotions should contribute a large amount of bias towards choosing an occupation. Relating to Thoreau’s philosophies which regarded happiness, a man must not tolerate working in a place where he is anxious and uncomfortable because “the more emotionally stable, agreeable, extraverted, or conscientious people are, the more [he] tend to like their jobs(irrespective of their salaries)” (Chamorro-Premuzic). The pressure of climbing the social ladder to reach a ‘happy’ life while in competition with millions of others can emotionally trap…
It is said that the great quest in life is to find happiness and in happiness wisdom. Aristotle says that happiness is among the highest of goods, that it comes from a sense of being at work, a work that makes your soul feel at peace. It is a type of work that you can do with beauty and excellence. It is something that only you can do, it is your gift. And through this, you are able to do the work that God intended for you. A New York University film called this search of happiness and wisdom, seeking the owl. Some people spend a long time searching for what they are destined for but sometimes you get fortunate and the work finds you.…
