However, many minorities are subject to different levels of discrimination. These may range from direct maltreatment to indirect factors such as lower job opportunities. Interpersonal relationships are important in patient outcomes, as they affect the way the nurse relates to the individual. However, more importantly, doctors are reluctant to prescribe some medications to individuals from certain racial groups as they feel they are liable to misuse. Moskowitz et al. (2011) carried out a study to assess the level of trust physicians have between members of different race. The study was done with one hundred and sixty nine patients with HIV. The measurement tool in the study was the Physician Trust in Patients Scale. The results in the study illustrate that the non-white population was trusted less than the whites, regardless of a similar rate of illicit drug abuse. The study illustrates the presence of stereotyping in the healthcare system. Furthermore, the stereotyping was performed subconsciously which raises the need to create awareness on this issue in the healthcare
